We climbed to the Cross of Provence on August 22.

The trails are very well marked, and it is impossible to miss the trail going up. We did, however, get slightly lost on the way down.

There are a couple routes up and signs that give you a sense of how long the trip will take. We thought these signs were overstating how long the hike would take, but ultimately found they were very close to our actual hiking time. I say "hike", but at times it was almost more of a "climb" than a "hike".

The views along the way and from the top were excellent, It was a very hot day and we probably should have taken more than the 350-700ml of water that we each had.

On the way down, we managed to miss the turnoff to our parking lot. On the way up, it is obvious where you are headed. We didn’t really pay attention on the way from the parking lot to the base of the climb to what it would look like going in the other direction. And it was a very hot day so on the way back, we found ourselves on the wrong path and had to work our way back with phones and GPS. Ultimately we were almost 6 hours from car to car.

This majestic mountain rises dramatically and visibly for miles around. It appearance changes constantly as the light moves, or one moves oneself--thus the appeal to artists. I don't know too many mountains where you can catch a city bus to the trails! I think that things have changed a bit in the last few years since some travelers complained: trails a little more marked, there is an interpretive center called Maison Ste Victoire, and there is a newly reopened restaurant at the "Maison." We had a delicious meal there.

Caught the 110 public bus from Aix En Provence (stop is just around the corner from the main bus station) a return ticket cost a couple of Euro. You can ask the bus driver to drop you pretty much anywhere. We were dropped off at Maison Sainte Victoire and walked the tracks back to Le Bouquet, taking our time and visiting a few sites along the way.

Did it in December, magic sunny weather but cold and extremely windy in fact too windy to make the summit and too dangerous but the fit hills are fantastic.

I used google maps and a satellite image to navigate. The paths were marked with coloured paint to indicate the section of the walk as the tracks can cross cross. Worth buying a 5 euro map from the info centre that has the paths.

Only issue is the bus stops out of town are not marked and the returning bus only comes every few hours so if you miss it or can’t wave it down, it’s 11km back to town or a very cold wait. The government needs to sort this with bus stop poles. Our bus driver in the way out was great. The one on the way back drove the bus like he stole it and he almost didn’t stop.

Great day out

If your young old, into hiking or just a regular walk. This is a perfect activity. With different routes that you can take, you can decide if you want to walk just for a couple of hours or go for a day hiking.

The route has good signals on his way so you can’t get lost. You walk through the nature and see the mountain from all different angels.

I could do this walk every week.

Second time I’ve run up to the Croix on the Mt St Victoire parking just before Vauvenargues and taking the red/White marked Chemin to the top. A spectacular place - good enough for Picasso, Cezanne and the French Foreign Legion so obviously good enough for me!

This is an enjoyable hike up from the dam. It'll take a couple hours up and down (unless you're the guy who ran past us going up and back down). Great views. It's a little drive outside of Aix (and make sure Google doesn't send you the wrong way), but if you enjoy the outdoors, you won't be disappointed.

Beautiful hike! Be sure to ask a local before you go which trail to take though, it can be a little confusing.

Travelled to a small village called Puy Loubier to have dinner. Arrived early so drove around - What a spectacular mountain. Beautiful! No wonder painters come from so many countries. Worth a visit!
