It could have been so much better if it were organized and just any type of English assistance would have been appreciated.

I was hugely disappointed. This was a really poor show of works organised by the blind. I suspect the museum were struggling to hang and display the collection which was not all that interesting. If you like nubile ladies and ladscapes etc fine but nothing of great relevance to world culture even though it is a French Collection. One large... More

We were the only visitors in the museum during our visit & were outnumbered by staff. As others have said, this lovely building with interesting exhibits needs investment & publicity. Having said that, we enjoyed our couple of hours & learnt quite a bit about La Rochelle & its history.

A strange experience. Needs more investment. Overall disappointing, but there are interesting elements. The models of La Rochelle in the 16th century were well done and very informative. The impact of invasion on the town and the surrounding area, during World War 2, was simply done, but effective. Some nice pieces of artwork to be seen. Lovely old building. Staircase... More

As others have said, it needs a lift. That being said, it's an ok small museum concentrating on La Rochelle. There are lots of old views of the city and surrounding area.

Lovely little museum with a fine exhibition at the moment on La Femme - plus painting by the local painter, Fromentin. Certainly worth a visit but don't bother if you can't do stairs - two flights up an ancient staircase and no lift for those who are physically unable to climb.

Excellent permanent displays in very large villa in town centre. Very interesting collection related to the slave trade and wonderful temporary B & W photographic exhibition of portraits of people from around the world

A party of seven with our painting teacher travelled more than 100 kms today (saturday 16 june 2012) only to find the museum was closed for renovation. Very disappointed that this was not announced on any of the tourist sites for the area

The Musée des Beaux-Arts occupies I single floor in what I believe to be an old episcopal palace. In addition to other odds and ends, they have large collections of the works of Fromentin and Bouguereau, both local boys. (They don't seem to have any of Bouguereau's famous works; apparently the big Paris museums have claimed them by droit de... More
