A modern area by the harbour with a wide open flagged area that affords views across the water to the old part. Mostly wooden buildings with lots of places to eat and drink. Part of the area has street art too, good to stroll around, it's not a large area so it is easy to see.

Lots of timber cladding. But some nice restaurants. Nice views of the towers and the harbour.
We had lunch in Chez Hugo (21 Quai de Gabut) and we plan to return for dinner. Doesn’t seem to be listed on TA, that I could find.

La Rochelle is wonderful - truly the "most attractive and unspoilt seaside town in France" (to quote the Rough Guide) but after you've explored the harbourside, old town, parcs, beaches etc the Gabut makes an interesting change.

It's an odd mixture. A couple of years ago it had the feel of "it must have seemed like a good idea at some time to build a wooden pretend fisherman's hut quarter ... but it's never quite worked and is getting a bit tatty ...".

But in the last year or so it's been revamped and restored to life. With the new Tourist Office at one corner and the previous rather odd hotel within the Gabut closed and (I think) converted into apartments, many of the previously vacant bar/restaurant units are now occupied by good quality enterprises.

They're a refreshing mix of places compared to those around the rest of the Old Port which do tend to be a bit samey after a while. Well worth a stroll around and a drink or meal under the parasols looking over the Old Port - without the same crowds ...

Being La Rochelle pretty traditional and "serious" it is a nice counterpart, with its quaint wooden residences and the "guinguette" area and its graffitis and "alternative" bars.

And the view from this side of the harbor is also extremely pretty.

There's nothing special in this neighborhood, but some shops and a big bar, where students love to party sometimes.

Definitely the least good part of the port area. Cafes much more fast food rather than quality. Shabby compared with the other side of the port

A much calmer quarter than the main Vieux Port, a brilliant place to spend a morning with a coffee and a crepe in one of the port-side restaurants or cafes and watch the ships, boats and yachts go by.

Such a lovely area to wander around. But during this visit sadly, rather unlucky with the weather. Lots of cafes and restaurants to chill out in

After you have admired the harbour, visited the Aquarium and the Maritime Museum, head for this area to rest your feet and enjoy a cold beer or a light lunch. Lots of cafes to choose from - we picked Amiral Cafe and it was lovely. The galettes and ice creams were first class.

Modern shopping complex and new marina. Located next to the old port this is a nice addition to the neighbourhood. If you are visiting the old port you may as well stroll around the corner and view this addition - a nice place.
