The history of France's role in the slave trade, the involvement of slaves in the French owner's lives - mostly in the sugar plantations of the Carribean, and the timelines noted for the ending of such a form of commerce, were clearly presented in several...More

This museum, based in an imposing chateaux in La Rochelle, illustrates well the history of French involvement in the slave trade. An English audio guide is available and essential for those who cannot translate all the French information boards. Sadly, the audio numbers are not...More

Visited here today - this museum gives you a very exciting incite into the new world and the slave trade that La Rochelle was part of. The paintings and artefacts are excellently displayed - we were there about an hour and a half. The staff...More

Like so many big maritime towns and cities, the slave trade was the source of much wealth. La Rochelle has such a history and the museum is set in the home of a plantation owner. So an interesting juxtaposition. The connection with French overseas territories...More

This museum is really about La Rochelle's role in the slave trade, but since this is still a very sensitive issue, I guess they chose a name that would be less upsetting. I found it fascinating, and it was refreshing to find somewhere in La...More

To our great surprise, this museum did not provide information about the exodus of the Huguenots from France to the New World due to persecution. Why is this history missing from this museum? The museum does cover the French exploration of the New World which...More

A very well done history of the French explorations in the Americas. Lots of interesting exhibits set up in chronological order. There are English descriptions in every room. Reasonably priced, it's a good way to spend an hour or 2.
