This was a wonderful trip with unexpected snow experience.
Kids enjoyed the snow to themselves.
Not only that, the restaurant is a revolving restaurant with great food.
If given a second chance, will revisit this place again.

We needed a break from day hiking and decided to take the cable car ride up to Hoher Kasten. Even on a hazy day, it was a very enjoyable treat.

The ride up to the summit passed over some small dairy farms and pastures, with wonderful views all along the way to the surrounding mountains. Up top, there were spectacular 360-degree views that (we were told) reach into Liechtenstein, Austria, and Germany on a clear day.

Much as we enjoyed the views, we thoroughly enjoyed visiting the alpine garden just below the summit. There, a terrific and very knowledgeable botanist, Lydia, generously guided us around for over an hour and described (in layperson's terms) how different plants find homes in different kinds of soils and micro-climate conditions.

If you want to get transported -- literally and figuratively -- to some great vistas above the Rhine, take the cable car up to Hoher Kasten!

Not the best idea in 30C plus temperatures, parked at the bottom in Brulisau and took a steady walk up the mountain. The surface is uneven but with good shoes it’s not difficult, gradients aren’t too bad either. We went up with our 7 yr old, he found it no problem!

Views at the top are great, restaurant has good food and most importantly cold beer!

This is one of the more remote, lesser known mountain locations in Switzerland, resulting in a much less crowded environment and more reasonable prices. The visitors that come here are predominantly local Swiss or from the adjacent countries: Austria, Germany and Liechtenstein. You can take public transportation (train/bus combination) to Brülisau or, as we did, drive there by car. If you are lucky and get here on a really clear day, the view is fantastic: on one side you look over to the Säntis Massiv and the small Säntis Lake framed by high ridges. On the other side, you have a direct view down steep cliffs to the Rhein Valley and Lake Constance in the distance, as well as the hills and towns of Germany, Austria and the Principality of Liechtenstein.
You access this mountain by a cable car/gondola from Brülisau in the canton Inner-Appenzell, unless of course you decide to hike up to the top, which you can do both from the Rhein Valley or from Brülisau.
On top of the mountain, you can do a short stroll around the peak area, Unfortunately, this peak-walk is relatively short, but you can extend the experience by either walking down back to Brülisau or, as we did, do at least a short hike on that path and then return to the peak for the trip down in the Gondola. There is a very modern, comfortable and relatively reasonably priced (for Switzerland) revolving restaurant on the top in which we had a good meal (see separate post).
This mountain is well worth visiting, and so is the enchanting surrounding area of Appenzell with its charming villages and style of houses and farms - one of our favorite areas in Switzerland. Do not miss to taste a bite of the "Appenzeller Cheese" from the area.

We went up on 26. Dec. at very nice weather, not a lot of snow .
We had a very good view around the Peak.
At the end we ate some Food in the normal Restaurant, not the turning section.

Take the cable car up Hoher Karsten for spectacular views. The cable car ride itself was wonderful - as you go higher you can see over the whole valley with the cows peacefully grazing and hardly a person in sight. From the top of the mountain I am told you can see 6 countries although, not being European myself, I could not identify which ones I was seeing. All the same, this is a great place to get an overview of the mountains and the countryside of this very special part of Switzerland.

The cable car ride is steep but there are great views on the way up and of course once you get there. It was quite windy but there are panoramic views of the stunning Swiss landscape - lakes, mountains (some still with snow on in August), cows with cowbells and beautiful green valleys.

Lots of hikes start from Hoher Kasten but do you your research carefully and if you're not used to walking don't over estimate your ability. The sun was quite intense when we were there and although the paths down aren't difficult we were all aware of our knees as we descended. We took a route down the mountain with the detour in to Forstseeli which was through the woods and round a small lake where there was a hut but no toilets. We continued on to Ruhesitz where there was a guest house and where we picked up Trotti Scooters for the final descent. Great fun whizzing down the hill even for the adults!

Fantastic views of Switzerland, Austrian alps and lake Constance. The cable car leading to Hoher Kasten is also very beautiful going up the cliff of the mountain.

The views from here are absolutely spectacular. On one side you can see the rhine valley, on the other side you can see Appenzell, St. Gallen, Thurgau, the Lake of Constance and further into Germany if the weather is good. To get to the top you can take the gondola or you can hike up (2-3h hike). At the moment there is quite a bit of construction going on at the top so the best thing to do is to walk bit away from the actual peak to get away from that.
We were there with our kids aged 5-12 years old and they managed the walking quite well. There are some steeper drop offs around so if the kids are not used to the mountains you may have to take them by the hand in some places. From the top we walked back down to Brülisau. Around half way down there is the possibility to rent push scooters. You can then ride these down a bit over 3km of paved narrow roads which is great fun. Kids can ride by themselves but they have to be able to handle a bicycle well, especially the breaks as it is pretty steep in parts and there are some tight corners to get around.
