This is a lovely chateau set up on a hill overlooking the pretty town of Saumur. We visited in November and, unfortunately, the actual chateau was closed, However, it was free to wander the grounds and use the parking facilities. You enter by a lovely gate which is closed at sunset. There are a few nice places to sit and... More

Good market on Saturdays. Nice shops. Pleasant atmosphere. Walk through the streets and enjoy the feeling. The Loire I alongside the town.

While this is not the most famous of the chateaux along the Loire, it is closest to where we stayed and still very much worth a visit. Tours are offered in English and French, and the hosts are very proud of their chateau, which makes the experience even better. While there is less to see in this location than some... More

Great views looking out over the city. While I was there in Sept '16 the place was under major renovation. Not a lot to see inside it. Probably a lot of the rooms closed off due to the renovation. Would go back when all renovation is complete.

Not sure what people are talking about with a difficult climb up to this chateau. We parked immediately adjacent to the castle and were at the entrance in just minutes. No difficulties. There is no need to actually enter this chateau. Stop by for a brief visit to admire the views. Also make sure to take a fabulous photos of... More

Long uphill hike when trolley is not running. Parts of the château undergoing renovation which restricted some access, however we were fortunate to visit during "heritage weekend " there was no admittance charge. Superb views over the town and river.

The Loire Valley region and its castles are a beautiful part of France. Great for spending few days to visit the various castles. Saumur remains our favourite town. The panoramic view from the Castle is a most. Close to Saumur are Cande St Martin, several troglodyte caves and Bourgueil. We stayed at Huismes, near Chinon. It was not a very... More

Completed a guided tour with a multi talented informative tour guide who made history interesting and at times amusing. Wonderful collection of china, furniture and tapestries within a stunning environment. The views from the Castle ...well....they are simply stunning! If you love history, appreciate the architecture involved then this is a must.

After quite a hike up the hill from the river, we were disappointed to find a lot of the buildings were being renovated, and the chateau was closed for lunch. Once inside we were again disappointed with what we were able to see.

We decided against going inside the chateau as we had our 4-legged friend with us but had at least enjoyeded the view from the cafe restaurant. I also have a fear of heights and the bridge over the dry moat was enough for me! We enjoyed a walk around the outside, took some nice photos from the small vineyard before... More
