The apparent austerity of this shale and limestone fortress, which the young king Louis IX had built on the edge of his kingdom in the 13th century, contrasts with the tranquil grounds inside the castle walls and the pleasant residence of the Dukes of Anjou, composed of buildings constructed at the end of the Gothic era. To transform and embellish the castle into a more welcoming home for the Anjou court, terraces and gardens were laid out, galleries built and the gateway erected. The star attraction within the walls of the Château d’Angers is the Tapestry of the Apocalypse or woven in 1375. With its 104 metres in length, it is the largest medieval tapestry anywhere in the world. Brilliant castle, well managed. It only cost 18 euros, for a family of 4 which we felt was excellent value. The tapestries were superb, with the views of the city breath taking. Well worth a visit.

The castle dominates the city and is a must for any visitors if only for the spectacular views. However it also houses the Apocalypse Tapestry. Personally, I was moved to find that approximately 500 British sailors were imprisoned in the castle between 1779-1781 and some...More

The Fortress at Angers is an imposing structure, unlike many of the other chateaux of the Loire valley this one is clearly designed for war and is therefore very different. It is possible to walk along the top of the ramparts and take in the...More

We - Family of four (incl. 15yr old girl and 17yr old boy) - Spent an afternoon here dodging showers, fortunately the castle is great for all weathers as there is enough to see inside, especially the amazing tapestry of the apocalypse, but when the...More

Castle for Angers is imposing partially because it's in the city and partially because of the black and beige stones arranged in decorative patterns. Actually the walls we first saw are the ramparts. We paid the tariff and included the audioguide. The latter was fairly...More

On arrival I was impressed that children under 18 are free. We got the audioguide, when will I learn not to bother? The Chateau looks quite impressive but not many of the rooms are open and those that are are unfinished, not much to see...More

I spent hours here, wandering the grounds, walking all the way around the top of the wall, and slowly viewing the tapestries of the Revelation of St. John. It was all so beautifully kept and displayed. I even had a bit to eat in the...More
