Honfleur’s old harbor is the postcard of the Normandy region. The different colored buildings lining the harbor are exactly what you imagine when you think of a medieval French port. It is, however, extremely crowded with tourists and lined with touristy vendors, which spoils the atmosphere to some extent. For a better experience, you’ve got to get a few blocks away from the Harbor and explore the side streets and quaint shops.

On the way to Bayeux, we made a stop in Honfleur and didn't regret it. The harbor is worth a short visit. Beautiful old houses with many small restaurants. A large parking lot is located at the harbor after the vieux bassin. Compared to cities like Rouen or Bayeux, there is not much to see in Honfleur besides the short harbor basin. A short stop is therefore enough.

It is the heart of the city, you canot miss it. Fantastic pictures to be taken on a sunny day. Plenty of good restaurants all around the port. No surprise, you will experience a lot of crowd if the weather is nice.

How lovely to see such a well preserved and elegant port. There is a relaxed atmosphere around here and the buildings are all well maintained so the whole are is clean and smart. A variety of shops and restaurants surround it and the nearby back streets are a delight. Perfect place to visit on a glorious sunny late December day.

Le Vieux bassin is a charming place to stay. The terracesses and restaurants are near, but while we were here, there wasn't a lot of noise. Shops, bakeries, supermarket and restaurants are near. The bridge to this basin opens every hour.

Revisiting this harbor 20 years later with our kids. This was our first vacation together as a couple back then. This magical place has not changed. Restaurants and café surrounding the port. A beautiful place for a day out strolling around the harbor.

Beautiful harbour and port area in the centre of pretty Honfleur. The historic buildings and lovely architecture surrounding a dock and moorings area.
There are many restaurants and bars around the area and a great place for sightseeing and spending time having a local Normandy cider. The food is also great too, there are many choices for lunch and dinner options.
Recommend.

This old port of the town of Honfleur summarizes the spirit of the North ports but its character is more dim (because of some dark houses) as some other North ports like Nyhavn in the Danish Copenhagen - especially on some rainy and cloudy days. It is very picturesque and therefore a great challenge to all artists who want to depict it, as well as to many photographers around the world.
There are many cafes and restaurants all around the port but also many narrow streets (with half-timbered houses) which lead up to another historic wonder of the town of Honfleur - St. Catherine Church which offers the scent of the old viking wood churches. The town of Honfleur is truely beautiful and surely must not be missed when travelling around the Normandy region of France.

All the research, brochures, internet photo's cannot prepare you for the shock of actually visiting Honfleur.
Last evening I walked around the corner close to the 'Hotel de Ville' (Town Hall) and was met with the most amazing sight.
The Quay-side restaurants are simply full of character and characters.
moule fritte is obviously the 'plat-du-jour' and the portion sizes are not petit.
In the cobbled back streets are more small bars and intimate restaurants. My favorites were the many art gallaries. I now have a favorite sculpteur - Philippe Roussel.
If you are in Normandy do not hesitate, make the detour and go to Honfleur. Allow time to sit and watch the world go by. This isn't a place to be rushed.

Fabulous and very French port with lots of ambiance. Shops, sea, restaurants and yummy icecream make for a great day out when visiting Normandy.

How accessible is is this place from cruise terminal with a wheelchair?
Written 26 August 2019
I would have said, "Not very accessible at all." The streets are narrow, cobbled, and filled with tour parties from cruise ships (!) Having said that, if you can get on the "petit train" - which runs from the car park next to where the cruise ship/buses arrive - you could have a pretty good tour of the town. It IS very touristy - as already mentioned.

Hi We are coming to Honfleur for a day in early March. We would like to
walk around the harbour, or other picturesque area, visit a site or Museum- history rather than art. And Maybe take in a lite lunch in an area off the tourist track.
Any suggestions please.?

A walk around the harbor is great. if you go early in the morning the fishing fleet is just coming back and have their catch of the day available along the harbor wall - great to see even if noi buying. The old town adjacent to the harbor is nice as well, and the a stroll up to the main cathedral. They often have an open air market in the square outside the cathedral as well.

Where is the best place to park that's not too far away. I have bad knees and want to save them for walking around the attractive parts of Honfleur, not for getting to them. Thnaks

Hi, I cant say as on the day we had quite a walk and if the weather is great you are in for a walk as the place is packed. Fortunately lots of places to sit and relax so i would recommend you do it in stages with your bad knees - sorry.....

What is Hornfleur like the first week of Jan?? Busy or quiet? Thanks

Hi ! Every Saturday morning, near the Ste Catherine church, a market is held. There is also an organic market, on Wednesday mornings I believe. This will have to be confirmed by someone who still lives in town.

En effet les temps changent... Comme Honfleur est très aimé on se bouscule un peu. Surtout il faut garer sa voiture 🚙 bien à l’avance, et ensuite : marcher, flâner !!

We are arriving in Honfleur on the 22 April. We prefer to explore on our own. Can you recommend places of interest within easy reach of the cruise terminal
please.

Hi Pat and Bob
I can see no one replied to you and it was over a year ago now that you stopped in Honfleur.
Perhaps you could answer your own question for me - I arrive on the 1 June. Any info would be very helpful please.
Many thanks
Julie
