It’s a Monday in May and we arrive as Monet’s garden opens at 9.30am. It is busy but bearable. We enter the house (which is charming) without having to queue, but when we emerge again fifteen minutes later there must have been fifty people queuing to see inside.
The gardens are beautiful but the narrow paths mean you have to follow behind the hundreds of people in front of you at whatever pace they choose.
I was particularly excited to see the famous water lily pond, but after getting stuck in the throngs of people (literally shoulders to shoulder) we had to turn back.
Numbers need to be restricted to enable visitors to enjoy this attraction.

We were unable to buy our entrance tickets on the official website because they had not sold tickets for several days. As soon as we arrived in Giverny this Thursday, May 9, 2024, my husband, my daughter and I stood in line at 10:21 a.m. A first queue in which we took our place following the instructions of the people who were already in line. After 45 minutes of waiting, and only about ten steps taken, we realized, as did the people waiting in front and behind us, that we were in the wrong line and we were forced to go back down the street to , guess what, get back in line. In total, we waited more than 4 hours without a place to sit! No member of the staff of the Institut de France, in charge of the house and gardens, passed along the endless queue before 3 hours of waiting had passed! And again, it was a quick visit just to ensure that visitors, who already had their tickets, were not waiting in line since this morning. No organization! It's deplorable. We waited standing for 4 hours before finally reaching the house and then the gardens. The visit to the house takes place in single file. No explanation is provided. Visitors must simply wander one after the other through each room one after the other. As for visiting the gardens, meh. No explanation about the different places in the gardens. No names of flower species. Visitors wander around there again. I had visited these gardens 20 years earlier, with my husband. During this visit, the gardens were easier to visit and above all more pleasant: more fragrant, quieter. With the road passing just behind, we can enjoy the noise of the car traffic! In summary, our family had a terrible time in this place. I will never visit it again. If I had to qualify my visit, it would be the visit not to do unless you want to wait for hours and then get bored. I bitterly regret this visit because 20 years ago, I loved this site and I wanted to introduce it to my daughter. We were very disappointed.

We parked at one end of Rue de Claude Monet outside the Commonwealth War Graves at Eglise Sainte-Radegonde de Giverny and walked through the idyllic village. We had to queue to enter the gardens and on reflection we should have booked in advance and purchased a ‘beat the line’ ticket. The queue however did move quickly and we were soon in the peaceful surroundings of Monet’s Garden. Well worth a visit

Big diversity of flowers on a quite big garden area, well channelled by paths large enough to circulate properly even if lots of visitors were circulating back and forth. High density of flowers, well arranged on different levels of highth, colour arrangements well fitting together. Indeed a magic paradise!
Lots of beautiful trees and bushes along a little river leading to the famous ponds and bridges.

The hardest thing about this tour was the fact that the number of people was not limited in any given area. We waited in a long line to tour the house and once inside it was stuffy and packed with people so it was difficult to take pictures. The gift shop also had long lines. I would suggest arriving as early as possible to try to avoid the crowds. The kitchen was stunning and the grounds were picturesque. Plan on taking a lot of photos in this beautiful place.

Fantastic! 🤩
Claude Monet
lived in his house in Giverny for 43 years, from 1883 to 1926. His gardens intact and preserved as a great work of art, which was his passion and inspiration. In the rooms of your house, you will find colors in pastel tones and lots of yellows. Including the blue details on the doors. The entire residence has windows facing the gardens with exotic flowers, giving a spectacular image to every little glance.
From Paris the A-15 road is 75kms away and is quiet and safe!
It's worth going!

Excellent experience. Walking tour of the Lily pond he painted so often.
His home and gardens he had planted so he could paint them! Interesting!
His home interior was amazing to see! I went in October perfect weather but the water lilies were not open yet.
Population of the town Giverny is only 500. very much the French countryside. Leaving from Paris it is about an hour drive.

I visited Claude Monet’s garden and house this Saturday of Ascension weekend. The house is charming but not very interesting. The garden is very beautiful, especially the part by the water. We were staying there on Friday evening and so we were there as soon as it opened: almost an hour in line anyway because I hadn't been able to reserve the tickets in advance. Once through the door we find ourselves in the magnificent gardens but unfortunately the crowds make the visit laborious and almost painful in the long run. The management of the site does not take this influx of tourists into account at all and no management of the number of visitors is implemented. The line of visitors grows longer throughout the day. You really have to be motivated to wait 2 to 3 hours or maybe more... and to find yourself in the crowd once you get through the door! So still mixed opinion in the end. A good point however for the village which has retained all its charm. No flashy shops, no unwanted advertisements or other tourist traps. It's already that !

General Impression: we're ruffling the genius house.
A crazy world, thousands and thousands of people in the garden. It is impossible to enjoy the tranquility of this beautiful flower garden.
To visit the house, you have to wait in a very long line and wait again.
In short, the site manager must be delighted with the recipe. At the limit, a Trip Tip, give a fork to the reception staff to cram guests even a little more in order to make even better profit.
Monnet must turn in his grave.

The place is sublime. The colorful flower beds are absolutely beautiful. The pool is magnificent. But so many people. Overcrowded even on a weekday morning. Impossible to move around the house. We could barely get in there. It might be time to regulate the flow of tourists a little by limiting or with better organized time-stamped tickets.

Not sure whether to get tickets for late morning or early afternoon. Is there a restaurant/ cafe there to get lunch; if so is it very expensive - can't seem to find any info on the website! TIA
Written 15 March 2023
There are lots of options for lunch close by. Nothing within the gardens. I did the early morning, which I loved, it was Autumn. But the light during the late afternoon could be lovely for pictures

Yes it is easy to buy tickets at the door. Some on line sites are very overpriced.
There are coach parties but we went in early September and coped well.
Take your time, enjoy the views round the Water Lily Pond, go round again. It’s delightful.

If you’re looking for the large fields of tulips that surround the park, those are gone now, those are owned by farmers and have all been cut down. Usually the height of tulip bloom is from end of March to beginning of May. But you can also visit their website and they have a flowering report.

Los tickets se pueden comprar allí , cuando lleguemos o hay que ?hacerlo en forma anticipada por internet

Hola, estoy pensando en ir por allí y quisiera saber el tiempo promedio que lleva el recorrido de todo. Gracias
Written 16 July 2017
I purchased a ticket online and it stated a time of 9:30 a.m. It was the only time listed when I booked the ticket. I think it just means that is when it opens for the day. Or, does it mean that is the time we have to arrive?
Written 6 June 2017
It's when it opens for the day. I also booked online and my printed ticket had the same information, but we went in a little later. It's good to arrive early, though, because it gets crowded. If you have a printed ticket skip the lines and use the entrance for groups.

Hi, Is The Clos Normand - Fondation Claude Monet tour the same as the Monet house and gardens tour? They are listed as No 1 & 2 of things to do in Giverny on T.A. but they sound like the same tour! Thanks in advance.
Written 27 August 2015
Yes, same thing - only with the tour you get a guide, if you don't do the tour, you are free to walk around by yourself. We didn't do the tour. It is definitely something to see, beautiful! Enjoy!
