One is spoilt for buildings like this in France, but this one has that rare special feeling inside that many have lost due to excessive focus on tourism (Notre Dame de Paris, I'm looking at you!). The stark grandeur of its sister abbey is contrasted here by bright white stone with an open, light nave and intimate little nooks to... More

Once again a big church and so full of historic meaning. the gardens were a bit of a disappointment compared to the men's abbey. Be ware if you are walking to it there is a good up hill pull.

I visted quite early in the day towards the end of June. For much of the time I had the place to myself. Built by William's wife Mathilde to appease the Pope, if not God, it emphasises the female side of religion with representations of many female saints. It also has some rather colourful stained glass.

Fairly plain interior and a pleasant enough location but not a lot there to see inside except the tomb of Mathilda

The abbaye is a beautiful peaceful spot to discover in Caen. We went inside the church while a man was playing beautiful music on the organ. So beautiful, it was difficult to leave! It's a great spot out of the way, out of the whirlwind!

We missed the guided tour (French only) to the main Abbaye aux Hommes and went to this Abbaye for a guided tour. The Abbey part of the building is now used by the local council. It is not too obvious where the meeting point of the free tour is, but we never regreted. It is a small group of only... More

Not nearly as elaborate as the Abbey des Hommes across town, but it has Queen Matilda's grave, and presumably her remains. You have to be a fan of Matilda to end up here, or maybe early architecture.

This is a good change of pace after being though huge tourist centers. A peaceful place, and a nice walk to unwind a little bit.

Because this abbey is not situated in the centre of the city like the other one it must get less visitors (we were the only ones), but it's also well worth a visit. Architecturally stunning (and free - English cathedrals take note!)

We stumbled on the french tour for this one. The tour was very informative, though the abbey is not well signed and we had a bit of trouble finding the entrance. Really enjoyed the visit to the crypt and seeing Mathilda's tomb
