One of the largest castles in Europe and very commanding as it sits lording it over Caen. We didn't visit the museums but did enjoy just strolling around the chateau.

There is much to see in the remnants of William the Conqueror's seat of power. Although most of the interior structures were obliterated in the Allied bombings of June-July 1944 the massive exterior walls can still provide some idea of past greatness. A modern museum,...More

You can check out the moat of William the Conqueror's old digs. Most of the walls are completely intact. I wish some of the buildings were open when I was there.

Wonderful weather helped as we went to the Chateau. Amazing grand entrance that opened up into not quite what I expected, a vast expanse and a carpark

I've been many times to the castle over the past 30 years and it never ceases to impress me. It's a bit strange at first because there is no indoor part to it. remember that Caen was flattened in June 1944 so only the exterior...More

Wonderful chateau with lots to see and do, 2 nice museums and a very interesting garden with medieval type plants. Great views over the town from the ramparts and a lovely path all round the keep down in the dry motte

This is the castle ruin of William the Conquerer. That is like almost a thousand years' history. Definitely a must visit.

Yes, 5-10 minutes walk (slightly uphill some of the way). Plenty of restaurants/bars/brasseries within the same distance.
