To be standing on the ground that once house William the Conquerer's castle was an experience. There is still a lot to see and it is a very popular location. We went twice in two days to ensure that we saw it all.

A historical site to understand how the ancient emperors maintain protection against potential invaders. The view of Caen from the castle is very nice as well.

We will be on a Tour of Canadian Battlefields & Memorials in Sept. We're staying at the Mercure Caen Centre Port Plaisance - is this hotel within walking distance of the chateau and what restaurants/bistros are nearby?

Yes, 5-10 minutes walk (slightly uphill some of the way). Plenty of restaurants/bars/brasseries within the same distance.
