I had several hours before leaving Caen on my way to Rouen and walked over to this impressive ancient structure in the city's centre. The walk along the ramparts provided extraordinary views of the city. The area also houses the city's museums. Be sure to...More

We walked around this the first night we arrived and it was beautiful so we went back during the day as well. You can walk along the ramparts and there's lots of information about the history around the ruins.

This area dominates this end of Caen. A sprawling complex of museums, galleries and historical sites. The high ramparts are impressive and give great views across the city.

This is an interesting partial reconstruction of William the Conqueror's castle. There are nice views over the town of Caen as well. It's worth walking through and reading the helpful signs to drink in the history of the place.

When walking around taking it all in, be sure to get up to the ramparts, where there are excellent views of the city, and you get to see the outline of the old castle. Definitely a must do.

A vast castle with a significant role in Western European history but for me as a self-confessed castle nut not that satisfying. It rather feels of a giant community facility with lots going on and that's great, but the focus on the history of the...More

Castle located in the centre of Caen close to the town hall. The tour takes about an hour excluding the museum part. The views from the top are nice. A good zoom would be an advantage. There is a pay parking right under the castle.

One of the largest castles in Europe and very commanding as it sits lording it over Caen. We didn't visit the museums but did enjoy just strolling around the chateau.

We were spending just one evening in Caen and after dinner, decided to take a walk and came upon the Chateau Ducal only to discover that we had arrived at the castle ruins of William the Conquerer! The adjoining buildings were closed for the evening...More

Yes, 5-10 minutes walk (slightly uphill some of the way). Plenty of restaurants/bars/brasseries within the same distance.
