The town of Bayeux, in Normandy, lies 30 kilometres north-west of Caen. Bayeux War Cemetery is situated in the south-western outskirts of the town on the by-pass (D5), which is named Boulevard Fabian Ware. On the opposite side of the road stands the Bayeux Memorial. BAYEUX WAR CEMETERY, which was completed in 1952, contains 4,144 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 338 of them unidentified. There are also over 500 war graves of other nationalities, the majority German. The BAYEUX MEMORIAL stands opposite the cemetery and bears the names of more than 1,800 men of the Commonwealth land forces who died in the early stages of the campaign and have no known grave. They died during the landings in Normandy, during the intense fighting in Normandy itself, and during the advance to the River Seine in August.

I don´t think a cemetery can be beautiful, but this is somehow although you stand with tears in your eyes shocked by the realisation that most were just children.

We walked to the cemetery after going to the Bayeux Tapestry. If you watch the film at the exhibit it explains the interesting connection with the inscription at the memorial.

A moving tribute to those who lost their lives. We visited during our trip to Normandy region. It's situated on the outskirts of Bayeux and close to the historic downtown area.

Many people go to Normandy to see the site of those pivotal events of D-Day and the immediate aftermath. Opposite the cemetery there is the truly excellent Museum of the Battle of Normandy. You will see the hardware, read stories, learn about the planning, and the sacrifice. A short walk away you can see the reality of that sacrifice, and... More

As a balance visit we visited the main landing beaches for American and British Canadian and also one cemetery for each. Very sad visits but give a view of the magnitude of the life sacrifices in different battles. We did it with an organized Overlord group tour.

My partner and I were visiting Normandy to undertake a pilgrimage to visit her Grandfather who fell during the Normandy breakout in 1944. While we were in Bayeux we had to visit the largest British Cemetery in Normandy. I can honestly say that this and the Memorial to the missing across the road is one of the most peaceful and...
