There are quite a few museums and historic places around Lourdes related to Bernadette and her family including Le Cachot which is situated along Rue des Petits Fosses in the city centre. Opening hours are 9am to 12pm (morning) and 2-6pm (afternoon) and entry is free.

It seems this is where the Soubirous family of six lived in1857-1858 at the time Bernadette began to have her visions of the Virgin Mary in the nearby caves. It is a 16m² room that was a prison dungeon until 1854 and can been seen in much the same condition as when the family resided here a few years later.

There are some pictures and general information that you can read up during the visit which should take no more than 10 minutes of your time. We found helpful guides within that pointed us to English information cards.

It is the former prison where St. Bernadette and her family lived when she saw the apparitions. Basically just a room but you can imagine how hard life was for St. Bernadette and her family living here. Entrance is free and the line to get in may be long (and could get noisy) depending on whether you will be catching the tail end of a tour group.

This should be visited through the Info center to be able to have the full real story. It forms part of Bernadette’s life when she was young.

To know more of St Bernadette, it would be a good idea to visit her home and see how she and her family lived. While visiting this place, we were only allowed 5 people at a time, socializing distancing ourselves. You’ll read stories about St Bernadette and her family.

How Bernadette's family coped at all when they were forced to live here is another miracle. A very sobering place.

When Bernadette first saw 'the lady' she was living at the Cachot, described as a 'hovel' and unfit for prisoners!

This is a stop along the trail of Bernadette. This was an old jail that became apartments and after the family mill failed this is where they lived in 2 rooms.

Imagine a simple life like the Soubiros family living at that time, simple but then full of grace all the way...
