An amazing arrangement of churches in three layers on the side of a mountain, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. A chapel with a church on top and then a basilica underneath built in stages as the site became more popular, making the most of its dramatic setting. Maybe a bit theatrical - Bavarian castles and Disney come to mimd, but this composition of buildings has physical and spiritual integrity which should appeal to spiritual as well as the romantic and curious parts of our nature!

This beautiful basilica is impressive in person. Check the hours as it is closed during the nightly procession. During the second night we were there, we watched the procession from the upper level going up the ramp from the sides. Inside, the basilica is beautiful and peaceful. Underneath, there is a large room that we were told of, but did not get a chance to see it as we were also exploring the villages outside of Lourdes.

Basilique de l'Immacculee Conception is the second church completed in the Sanctuaire de Notre-Dame de Lourdes. It was built between 1862-1871 and was consecrated in 1876. It has a capacity of 550 worshippers. It is also known as the "Upper Church" and has a 230 ft spire. The 2 shorter spires opened in 1908. The church is 167 ft long and 69 ft wide. Beautiful interior and exterior.

I Remembe been here in the 80's it was nice and comfortable then. This time It was December and the heating was completely inadequate. The Masses were in French and the afternoon were English free.No English masses in the afternoon.I know that it was December but many others felt it could have been better organised.Refurbishment necessary here seating and kneelers veryold fashioned.Pity it has been allowed to get so disheveled.Disappointing!!!.

Walk up the basilica and you will definitely get an awesome view of the grounds of this holy place. So serene and peaceful for me. During my visit, they held the procession up to the second floor of the basilica and around. There is a small chapel inside where they had the morning mass.

Accessible by stairs in reaching this 2nd top Basicilica. We attended mass here for 2 consecutive days although it was conducted in French language.

This church built above the grotto appears to be immense, but the inside is small than the ornate outside. Not one of the best in France, but a place that commemorates the event that happened in Lourdes in 1858. There are many memorial plaques lining the walls and several small side chapels

The Upper Basilica is a Neo-Gothic church inside the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes. The tower of the Upper Basilica has four bells with names. The 2-tonne bell is called Jeanne-Alphonsine. The other bells are named Geneviève-Félicie (1800 kg), Hermine-Benoîte (1100 kg), and Cécile-Gastine (800 kg). Every hour, the Upper Basilica's bells play the Ave Maria of Lourdes. There is no entrance fee to climb to this Basilica.

The Basilica is stunning. As you approach it, there is a sense of awe that overtakes one. A large square on front is where nightly processions begin at 9 p.m. daily. A crowned statue of Our Lady is at the beginning of the square. Inside, there are several mosaics, beautifully done on walls with the story of Christ's life depicted, as well as Mary's. The statue used in the processions is in a separate room and also a bronze cast of her. Souvenir coins are available for 2 euros from a machine.
