I understand why the monument was erected but my difficulty is due to the surrounding wood which makes it impossible to work out the lay of the land or locate points of interest. The hill (like nearby Cote 304) is still heavily pockmarked by shell craters and although there are trails through the woods, it won't help you further in... More

It's a pain to get to but completely worth it. I went on a soaking wet day and glad I did. If you go, after you park your car backtrack down the road and walk up that path, I followed the signs through the woods, which is ok on dry days but it's easier the other way.

I believe the old line is: "Madness or Lunacy is making the same mistake again and again." Well, this is it. How many times does one fight over the same small piece of earth and cover it with so many dead bodies. If that isn't madness, I don't know what is.

I have just read the recent reviews and felt I must comment as it is now 100 years since the awful battle of Verdun. It is some time since we visited this area, but this one spot seemed the most poignant. We were the only couple there and found ourselves in a clearing amongst the fir trees. It seemed as... More

We have recently visited Mort Homme which is situated to the west of Verdun. The monument is impressive but there is not much else to see although there are some good walks in the vicinity. Hill 304 is also close by but again there is not much to see. I would advise giving these a miss and utilise the time... More

If you're a WWI battle student or visitor, then you must stop by here. A simple but moving monument. War trenches surround the area.

The monument itself is a bit spooky but worth seeing. It's off the beaten track like many of the battlefield sites in this area.

while the monument is striking and the views are impressive, the 100 year old remnants of battle stay with me the most. The entire landscape of the hilltop is scarred, with shell craters and trenches still visible even though now covered with grass and trees. The monument has a skeletal impact that recalls just how many died in defending this... More

There are several routes you can take but no trees painted or arrows to indicate the route so hard to just head off into the undergrowth without any sense of direction. Excellent monuments and we were the only people so very quiet and serene.

Quite appropriate monument. Most US generals hate war. During the 10 months BATTLES of Verdun, the German & French Generals loved war. The men did not! Neither the German nor French people or soldiers were blood thirsty. And the first cousins Nicholas, and Wilhelm did not seek war. Civilain government must control the generals. Verdun is but one example of... More
