- leonard mEdinburgh, United Kingdom410 contributionsA wonderful modern museumThis museum has only existed for a few years and is a wonderful addition to the appreciation of the influence of ancient Rome on the area. Architecturally the building is a bit quirky from the outside (but interesting) and inside, it is laid out in a very imaginative and accessible manner. They have a lot of exhibits and several interactive displays. The lighting is particularly good. The displays cover pretty much most things you might associate with Roman style living (and death). Amongst other things they have an extensive and interesting coin collection, made more enjoyable by the deployment of magnifiers on sliding rails that allow you to examine the coins in great detail. There is a good range of glass, including some spectacular and beautiful large funeral urns with lids. We particularly liked the accessibility of the displays and the informative texts. It is a very nice space to wander around. While we visited there was a class of about twenty children under instruction from one of the staff and they appeared to be completely absorbed and interested in what she had to say - so there is something for everyone! The museum is conveniently and centrally located with a decent cafe and toilets. Well worth a visit.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 October 2023

I learned a lot and thought the technology in use was top notch. The Timelapse video of the building of the museum was the icing on the cake.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 October 2023

Great overview and an astounding collection of artifacts from 2,000+ years ago. Be sure to get the audio guide at the front desk. Displays are in French with some in English as well. The audio guide is available in several languages (French, English, German, Spanish, etc.). Consider getting the Pass Romanite which will allow you to visit this Museum, Maison Carree, Tour Magne, and the Arena all inside of a 2-3 validity period for the ticket(s). Worth it. Great museum in the center of town.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 20 May 2024
- JoannaFthegrumpyLondon, United Kingdom95 contributionsWorth spending a couple of hours for some local historyI kinda preferred the Roman Museum in Lyon, which I visited way back in 2017. The issue I had with the Nîmes museum was that it was a little bit too interactive. Not enough emphasis on actual finds for my liking. But I am old-fashioned that way. I also managed to get lost. The arrows are not Joanna/idiot-proof. I ended up doing a bit of the tour backwards and out of the suggested order. The main exhibition is broken down into themes, but somehow it didn’t do it for me in the same way other places have. What might have put me off a little bit was the fact I went to the Achille special exhibition first. Some of those videos go on for 35 minutes and aren’t the most riveting thing you’ll ever see. And there were very few exhibits there. Most of it seemed to be videos littered with typos that spell checking should have picked up. The mosaics were something else though. Well worth it for that. Finally, the highlight of my visits are often the shops. I bought nothing. That says it all. Worth it for a couple of hours, but there are better museums out there doing the same thing better.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 20 May 2024
- TimDiggleHarrogate, United Kingdom203 contributionsFascinating museum - not to be missedBeautifully laid out museum with some genuinely impressive displays and artefacts. It is laid out chronologically, with helpful arrowed guides on the floor to keep you on track, starting with a reconstruction of a paleolithic dwelling and a video of its discovery. The display then moves through the ages with a mix of reconstructions, which you are free to touch, and genuine relics behind glass. All exhibits are described in 3 languages (Eng, Fr, Esp) and include models of the roman buildings, its infrastructure and descriptions of their construction. Though the tour starts with the paleolithic ends with the medieval and modern history of the city these element is not particularly extensive and the vast majority is devoted to the roman period. The building itself is impressive, inside and out, and is one of the best of its type I have visitedVisited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 July 2024

Musee de la Romanite is a terrific museum. It houses some excellent exhibits from very early times, stretching over a 2500 year period. There are sculptures and many other artifacts from the tiniest to some quite large pieces. The multimedia, videos and the like, help in gaining a better understanding of the whole thing. Definitely worth a visit, and the entry fee is not much by comparison.

Beautiful museum but our visit was spoilt by the entrance staff not informing me that the museum would be closed early on Friday for an evening event. I had purchased a 'Roman 3 day pass' that was now useless as you can only have one visit per attraction. If I had known that I would have saved the museum, the most expensive attraction for the Sunday. I had a whole floor left to explore and I was originally thrilled that the museum hours were until 7pm. Not everyone has an deep wallet so I asked if we could continue our curtailed visit on one of the other 3 days. I did my best to explain in French but it seems no discretion is allowed and we were refused entry to finish our experience. Having worked in the museum sector, I found this lack of flexibility for non France tourists, very disappointing. My advice is the museum is well worth 2- 3 hour visit. If you are not French speaking check on the web thoroughly that there is not early closing as your visit could turn out to be very poor value indeed when asked to leave early.

This 2018 modern structure, overlooking the Arena, displays high quality Nimes area artifacts detailed in English. After paying E9 each, we took the elevator to the top floor and wound our way down through the well displayed halls, following the floor arrows. Noteworthy were 4th C BC and 1st C home models, Roman milestones, weapon and coin displays, arena statuary, complete pictorial mosaics and 19th C models of Roman structures by Auguste Pelet.
The bottom floor included a wonderful temporary Etruscian exhibit on loan from Florence. Noteworthy were their 4th-8th C displays of bronze axes, helmets, spearheads and gold jewelry that were in demand, then the decorated earthenware and carved limestone memorials that preceded the Romans.

This is a beautifully curated museum, with traditional historic objects and interactive audio-visual displays. Really good audio tour available in several languages. The museum provides wonderful context for your wanderings around Nimes itself.

This is an incredible museum. The design of the building and the open, airy galleries are delightful. The exhibits are second to none with artefacts from pre Roman conquest on. There are great interactive opportunities and reconstructions. There’s a lot in this muséum but it is spaced out so each piece can shine. Highlights for me were the foundation and growth of Nîmes displayed on a topographical mock up, the gallo-romaine exhibits and the mosaics. If I ever get to Nîmes again this is the first thing on my list to re-visit.

We are having a long weekend in Nimes, with our 6 year old son. Is this museum child friendly? He only speaks English. Thank you :-)
Written 21 September 2022
He'll love it. Lots of activities, some presentations allow you to change the language. It's not too large that he will get bored. We were very impressed, as we're our kids.

Will this museum be open on Tuesdays in the summer? Website says closed Tuesday but Tuesday tickets show as available. Confusing. Also are there English guided tours available? Again, website says they exist but lists only tours in French.
Written 30 March 2019
They had English tours once a week last year. Drop them an email and ask, in both English and google-translated French.

Cordialement.
