My wife and I visited Montpellier during and excursion on a Viking Ocean Cruise last November. It was a lovely city but the on and off rain spoiled some of our enjoyment. We saw the Arch de Triumph at a distance but the weather prevented us from walking to the site. We liked much of the architecture downtown. Hopefully, we can visit again during good weather because I like the vibe of the city.

I enjoyed the sheer beauty of the area around here. There's a green area and park and I jogged round the loop many times. You can see the aquaduct below. This is all on a hill so the view is worth a photo.

An impressive arch from the 17th Century in place of the old walls and a port to the old city. It now dominates a viewpoint esplanade and a somewhat busy boulevard. Also leads into the law courts area.

Same idea as the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, but smaller. Built to the glory of king Louis, at the end of an avenue leading to the royal park.

This was a beautiful area with the triumphal arch being the highlight, but there's also a park, other monuments, and, or course, amazing views. It really gives a great first impression to welcome visitors into Montpellier. We were there in July 2020 as cities are trying to work out how to welcome tourists among the Covid pandemic, so some areas were blocked off and they were routing people in directional paths. (However, it was pretty empty when we visited, so all unnecessary, on that day).

Montpellier’s Arc de Triomphe dates back to the 17th century. It honors Louis XIV and was constructed in place of one of the city’s eight gates. Great views can be had from either just across the street at Place Royale du Peyrou or from just in front of the Palais de Justice. Exercise caution while admiring as there is two-way traffic underneath the arch.
