A large square in the centre of the city with the opera house close to the statue of the 3 graces and at the other side the tourist information office at the end of the Esplanade Charles de Gaulle. There is a large selection of cafés and bars along one side of the square. You can also catch the tourist train here.

Every time I walked through this area, be in daytime or night, it was lively and festive. Young people sitting at cafes, families with children enjoying one of the carousels, teenagers hanging out with friends and people out shopping. The surrounding buildings are stunning and even more beautiful at night when they’re illuminated.

This beautiful square was very close to our hotel and we spent quite a lot of time there. We were in the town on a Sunday and had been told it would be quiet with most places shut.
This was definitely not the case! The area was extremely busy and nearly all bars and restaurants were open if not the shops.
It is surrounded by beautiful buildings and lovely fountain and park at one end. It is full of character and characters and it was a shame we could only stay one day as we really likes the culture and history around this place.

The place de la Comédie is the nerve centre of Montpellier - a broad plaza that runs between the old opera hall at one end and the Esplanade Charles de Gaulle at the other. It is lined on each side by a series of old cafés and fast-food joints, but is also the venue for the local market. A wonderful place to stroll.

This quite small as area (like old market square) is fantastic to visit during (not rainy), sunny daylight times (perhaps very lively also during late evenings?). Lot of nice restaurants & cafe's with large outdoor sitting places & terraces. Easy to visit & enjoy different kind of food, desserts etc. Can be recommended also if you have only short time to walk around,, we did that from Train Station, 10 minutes walk .

A great place to have a coffee and people watch. Serviced by two tram lines. Line 1 takes you to Odysseum via Port Marianne. 👍🏻 A short walk away is the Arc de Triomphe, worth a visit. I’ve included a couple of photos from one Christmas. 🙂

At the very heart of the City, Place de la Comédie (Opera Square is a better translation than Comedy Square) offers a brilliant example of what sound urbanism can offer to cities. Historical buildings and modern organization giving priority to pedestrians and public transportation created an large open space that became the beating heart of the city.
When you see what was this Square back in the seventies, crowded by dozens of cars, you realize the great improvement the present organization brought to Montpellier.

Myself and my partner stayed in Montpellier for a sightseeing holiday of the surrounding areas in Langedoc.
We were both very disapointed with Montpellier and I personally dont understand the good reviews it gets, I found it was covered in graffiti which ruined the nice buildings especially in La Comedie, there was dogs mess everywhere, lots of homeless and beggers constantly coming up to you (especially at the tram stops which can be intimidating when you dont know exactly what your doing!), lack of any signposting or any information at any of the sights. We noticed people on top of the Arc de Trimophe but after walking all around the area couldnt figure out how! When walking off the main streets it seemed a bit dingey and I didnt feel comfortable walking in some areas.
When we went for a drink in a cafe in La Comedie the waiter was extremely rude (to all customers) we were ignored for 10mins and our drinks were slammed down on the table, so not exactly a good welcome to the area. I can see how this square could be nice but it needs to be tidied up, and more friendly for tourists with some signage.
All in all a very disapointing day of our trip and I wont be visiting again!

Not a nice atmosphere - everything seemed claustrophobic and I felt concerned for my security. Lots of Sans Domicile Fixe people (homeless) dirty young men and women with scary big dogs, lots of gypsies begging

"You will almost certainly cross Place de la Comedie during your Montpellier stay. It is one stop away from the main train station and a 3 minute walk to the shopping mall Polygone, where you can find almost anything. Be aware of street crooks. Men, usually teenagers of ethnic descent roam the square and nearby streets asking you to sign a sheet of paper on a board and donate money. They will ask for a 20€ bill saying they have change to return 15€ so that you donate only 5€, they snatch your 20€ and run away. DO NOT GET FOOLED! And dont get put off by large groups of "chômeurs" or bums with dogs. They mean no harm and as far as to my experience you dont have to fear thievery from their side.
There is a McDonalds where you can connect to free wifi (everybody uses this hotspot so it may be slow at times) there is also a Monoprix and a huge cinema. The blue tram has a stop just infront of Monoprix. The TOURIST OFFICE is just a few steps behind the Gaumont cinema where you can find all neccessary info and free city maps. Every friday there is an "ESTIVAL" on the square where you may purchase a 5€ ticket and then degustate wine, cheese and local products. Music, dance and fun guaranteed.

Il faut prendre un bus pour MILLAU, à la gare St Roch, puis de MILLAU, aller à Roquefort ( sur soulzon) en passant sous le viaduc. Il existe là encore des trajets en bus
