If you get the opportunity to visit Carcassonne, take it! Quite frankly, it is astounding - so much history there waiting for you to discover. You can cover it reasonably well in a day but if you can, spend two days.

As everyone rightly says, this is a must-see in Carcassonne (possibly the only sight worth visiting as the 'new town' leaves a lot to be desired) and one of the most beautiful and historic sights I've ever been lucky enough to experience. That said, if you don't want to encounter large groups of unruly French school-children (most of whom appear... More

Wonderful place to spend a few hours - go early as it gets very busy and this was in April - lots to see in the Chateau

The City is well worth a visit. Walk the lists, pay for the Château radio tour. Wander the streets. Restaurants off the square are quieter. Shops are mix of tourist tat and some decent quality.

Its like walking around a movie set on the Game of Thrones. Very quaint old buildings with lots of restaurants and shops. Very touristy, but still fun.

La Cite had long been on my wish list for a visit and it didn't disappoint. We arrived by train, having stayed 3 nights in Collioure. The railway station is a good distance from La Cite and took a good 30 minutes walk and steady claim. I'd recommend finding transport particularly as the first 20 minutes weren't so pretty and... As we have a holiday home in the area we go to the old city several times a year and we haven't been disappointed yet. There is a lot to see and do, the shops are interesting so we usually buy a few things including clothes. The cathedral is a real joy. There is often a musical group in there,... More

As many, many other people have noted: this is a beautiful Medieval city, that has been largely spoiled by the Disneyland-like atmosphere. Other than the city walls -- which were largely rebuilt in the 19th century -- there is very little authentic to the experience of visiting here. Pretty much everything is a tourist store selling some form of souvenirs,... More

Now a tourist haven. While the form of the city is in keeping with it's origins the shops are selling all sorts of modern and cheap nic nacs. Anyway I love the structure - just not much of the content!

A nice gentle stroll to the city.A bit touristy in some alleyways.Easter so was busy must be hot in summer. Was surprised some shops not as pricey as I thought. Ate a snack at Panini bar good price.
