French Medieval cities are second to none, this one is so beautiful and well maintained, lovey shops and good restaurants.

The city looks unbelievable with its numerous towers jutting out from the countryside. Steeped in history with its winding cobbled streets, great place to eat, great shops, highly recommend a visit.

From the outside, this just looks like a very large castle on the hill overlooking Carcasonne. But, inside is a complete midevil city! Unbelievable! The city also boasts at least 2 hotels, over 50 shops, and over 15 restaurants. You need at least 2 hours...More

We spent a couple of weeks in Carcassonne on holiday and enjoyed exploring the city at different times of the day (which I really recommend!). There are lots of shops and reasonably priced cafes/restaurants and the city is bigger than expected too. Great to walk...More

If you are in the area, you must visit this old city. Beautiful, with lots of character and has some magic shops. The restaurants are many, varied and good.

An absolute MUST for anyone visiting this part of France. We arrive by train from Toulouse. There were zero signs that we could see that indicated which direction the ‘Cite Medieval’ was and it isn’t visible because of the modern buildings of the town -it’s...More

We had trouble getting a taxi at the train station, don't know about airport. There was a taxi stand, but had to call the number posted. Waited about 20 min.
We are hoping to visit Carcassonne this Sunday 4th June however will the shops and restaurants be open?

There are always some shops and restaurants open on Sundays inside the medieval city because it is a tourist destination.
What is the best way to visit the city of Carcassonne from Washington DC (nearest airport, flights and trains, not car rentals) ?

From DC you would need to get a flight connection from Paris to Carcassonne airport. There are buses from the airport to the city for about €5 each way. I wouldn't recommend you to take the train from Paris as the trip... More
