when you think you have seen it all, then Apollo on his chariot rises out of the pond. The sculpture is amazingly fine. But the pond is so large that it is hard to see all the detail in the bronze without a zoom lens. it is worth the effort.

Pity the fountain wasn't going as it was winter and we had a dreary day. You can walk there easily from the Palace but watch out if it rains!

A lovely site to spend a while, with a beautifully sculpted status of Apollo as the mouth of the water fountain, with his seven horses, and lots of swan swimming around.

Located just next to the Great Canal, this big fountain is absolutely beautiful.
Designed by the famous Charles Le Brun over 370 years ago, it features the Greek God Apollo, emerging from the water riding 4 horses.
Too bad the fountain wasn't running, though, as it would've been perfect.

This was a nice sculpture/fountain. Unfortunately the fountains was not on when I was there. It looked a little run down compared to the photos online.

Probably the most beautiful fountain in the Versailles Palace. Complex and baroque, it is a pity that it is a bit run down and it’s original splendor is a bit opaque now.

A very large basin contains these horses, Apollo in his cart, toothy-dolphins, and the male figures that compose his entourage. Lots of energy here; horns are being blown as Apollo arises from the sea.

Most often associated with the sun, he had also changed himself into a dolphin to get off of Delos (he could change himself back). When he's a sea-god, his name is Apollo Delphinios.

It may be our favorite basin/sculpture/water feature in Versailles. It was so beautifully and realistically crafted that you could almost hear the noises of the water and the horses snorting.

This large basin is between the end of the Great Lawn and the Grand Canal. Louis XIV adorned this already existing basin with this sculpture of Apollo, his quadriga rising from the waves. Surrounding Apollo are 4 mermen astride sea creatures. Apollo, the Sun God, was the symbol of Louis XIV, the Sun king. This portion of the fountain was completed in 1670. When we visited on 03/20, the basin was full of water but not flowing from the fountain.
