This enormous Place was created by the urban renewal of Haussmann in the mid 19th Century. It is where several major boulevards come together with a huge statue/fountain in the center. Theaters and a neighborhood were torn down to create it. Today it can be the focal point of demonstrations. We saw a group dancing at dusk. Big cafes/restaurants surround, as well as hotels and an armory. Cool neighborhoods nearby, some of my favorite areas.

Republique has a beautiful, large plaza with a metro stop that is access for many lines. Highly recommend visiting this part of Paris if you get a chance!

If you want a glimpse of the young, political Paris, head here on a Saturday or Sunday. The day we visited, there were at least six protests unfolding at the same time and it was electric. There were also delicious kebab sandwiches being slapped together to one side, and street dancers doing a weird jig.
But back to the protests, there was a PETA / Fur is Murder march complete with foghorn and angry woman atop van. There was another for the rights of refugees. Another fighting for cleaner oceans. We got pulled in, handed pamphlets, smiled at and danced around.
And while these are all, obviously, very worthy causes, for us on a break far from home, it was more about something else. The real city, for one thing -- beyond the pristine perfection of the Louvre and the tower. And it was about people around the world being more alike than different -- what major city hasn't had protests for animals, the displaced and the environment?
It was moment to see it all from a distance and yet feel a part of a very different Paris.

Most people visiting Paris probably pass through the Place de la République one time or another. It is a major métro and bus hub within the city. If you have the time, it would be worth your while to come up out of the métro to see the Place. It is a very large square with major boulevards, rues and avenues passing through the square. It is historically significant. First, it marks the general location of one of the ancient Paris walls (Charles V) enclosing what was once the limits of the city of Paris. On the south side of the square is the 3rd arrondissement, which was the location of the fortress of the Knights Templar. Walking through that neighborhood will show you some of the oldest buildings in Paris. I once lived there in an apartment in a 16th Century townhouse. The square itself, in the center, contains a statue of Marianne, the French symbol of revolution. Some of the government buildings (on the northwest corner) are still marked by bullet holes from resistance fighters attacking the last German troops still in Paris near the end of WWII.
If you are hungry the Place is ringed by some excellent French restaurants (particularly on the eastern side of the square). If you want to try something different, there is a restaurant, Jenny's, which serves Alsacienne food (saurkraut and various sausages and meats). Leon's (of Brussels) specializes in serving mussels (a speciality of Belgium).

Quite overwhelming with the amount of people going about their individual business in this historic square. The square is quite vast and taking centre stage is the historic monumental statue of the republic, but around this centrepiece are thousands of people involved in political demonstrations, sight seeing, commuting, skateboarding, chatting, chilling and socialising: which added up creates a fantastic atmosphere and the square is surrounded by a lively cafe, bar and restaurant scene!

I've been to Paris before and didn't have time to visit this side of town. This time, my hotel was located right across from the square and I just loved the neighborhood. It is a beautiful square with lots of cafes and restaurants around it. It is connected to many subway lines and walking distance to other attractions. We got bad/rainy weather but I am sure that on a sunny day it is worth a visit to just sit down and people watch.

Last September my wife and I has the chance to travel to Paris for the first time. Since I did not know the place and since I have the Starwood Preferred Guest membership, I asked them about a nice hotel near downtown Paris. They recommended the Sheraton Place de la Republique.
As the name indicates, it is located just one block next to the Place de la Republique, which is a good departing point for many attractions in Paris. It is walking distance from Notre Dame cathedral.
The hotel is nice and clean, all the staff is very attentive, though I speak a little French, my wife, who does not, was thankful that they all speak English and were willing to assist you in English or even Spanish if required.
The room was client and comfortable and with the SPG program I got a very nice rate.
There are no inconveniences at all with the hotel, but my wife is rather picky with dirty places, and I have to admit that Place de la Republique is not the fanciest location. It is like being in the heart of any downtown, so it is noisy and not very clean in the streets around the hotel.
Anyway, it was a nice staying in a functional location, so if you do not have much budget this would be a very nice place to stay.
If there is a next time in Paris and more budget, maybe I will follow the advice of a friend of mine and will find a hotel by the Saint Germaine zone, which seems to be fancier.
