About
Situated on the right bank of the River Seine, the district has been significantly reorganized in recent decades, especially in the areas of Cour Saint-Émilion and Bercy, which now contain the French Ministry of Finances and the Bercy arena. The 12th arrondissement contains the Opéra de la Bastille, the second largest opera house in Paris. It was inaugurated in 1989, on the 200th anniversary of the storming of the Bastille. The Bois de Vincennes is also located in this arrondissement.

You will find the Gare D'Lyon here, as well as the big Bercy Park, and the Promenade Plantee, an elevated linear park. Otherwise it is a residential neighborhood that stretches out to the Peripherique and the Bois de Vincennes.

Loved the family nature of the 12th arrondissement. There is a nice farmers market every Thursday and Sunday on Duesmenil. The lovely park Bois de Vincennes is nearby and a cool immigration museum and tropical fish aquarium. There are convenient Metro stops and bus routes so I could go anywhere within minutes. I never waited more than 4 minutes for a subway train. There are also plenty of bike rentals and safe bike paths, which I didn’t try this trip. In fact, I barely scratched the surface of this charming neighborhood.

A few of the highlights of this area, is Place de la Bastille, the sit of the infamous Fortress Bastille, Rue Cremieux, a colourful street and Paris Gare de Lyon, a huge bustling train station, we also love the shore line of the harbour where Canal Saint meets the Seine.

The Coulee Verte is the most important feature of this neighborhood, and below it you will find the Viaduct des Arts, a collection of artists' studios, things to sell. The Coulee is an old elevated rail line that has been converted to an elevated park. You can follow it all the way to the city line. This is also a large residential quarter.

The Coulee Verte / Promenade Plantee / Greenway, an elevated park on the top of an old railway viaduct. The park was inaugurated in 1993 and until New York’s High Line park opened in 2009, it was the only elevated park in the world. What a fabulous walk we had - no scooters or bikes and only a couple of joggers. We did a couple of kms (the walk totals 4.7 km if you go right to the end) and then did a u-turn and came back part of the way before taking the stairs down to street level and walking along the Viaduc des Arts. The bottom of the viaduct, under the massive arches, is now home to artisans and crafts people of all descriptions for use as studios or ‘ateliers’ - everything from lamp makers to violin and piano makers.

For those adventurous, this outer area is worth exploring. Lots of people live here. The Parc Bercy is quite lovely and historic. I understand Rue Cremieux is now a lively center. Picpus Cemetery is home to Lafayette. Lots of restaurants.

Lots of trains in the 12th. You'll find the Gare D'Lyon and all the tracks leading away from it. And then the Pomenade Plantee, an elevated park built along the tracks of the old railroad from Bastille out to the suburbs. Don't forget the beautiful park in the old wine market, Parc Bercy. And the film museum.

I was told by a friend to roam around here and we took his advice. We do like to walk around and encounter discoveries. However, it was not really a touristy place and we aren’t into opera so we stayed for a few hours and took a bus out. Not much to see or do.

An absolute treat to enjoy at this time of year - the pink rose columns are at their very best just now. The maintenance of the walkway is good, and the variety of views, landscaping, and community engagement is a great advert for Paris, away from the popular tourist sites. You can access the walk at many points, but do try to walk/jog the whole route.
