About
Situated principally on the right bank of the River Seine, it also includes the west end of the Île de la Cité. The arrondissement is one of the oldest in Paris, the Île de la Cité having been the heart of the city of Lutetia, conquered by the Romans in 52 BC, while some parts on the right bank (including Les Halles) date back to the early Middle Ages. It is the least populated of the city's arrondissements and one of the smallest by area, a significant part of which is occupied by the Louvre Museum and the Tuileries Gardens. Much of the remainder of the arrondissement is dedicated to business and administration.

Neighbourhood: Louvre / Palais-Royal
From the majestic Louvre to the regal Palais-Royal, this neighbourhood oozes luxury. The grand arches along Rue de Rivoli are shadowed by mosaics in front of decorated vitrines and hotels. Place Vendôme is lined with the world’s best jewelers and their glittering window displays. Every other establishment has someone to open the door for you or park your car. You can spend hours gazing at its haute couture shops or lingering over a meal at any of its chic eateries. After all that indulgence, the Tuileries gardens provide stately respite, while theatres compete for your applause. we love walking through the older parts of great cities. There is always something to see. In Paris it is this area that is the most amazing and interesting. We stayed close to the opera and had a short walk to the Tuileries, the Louvre, the pyramid, the Seine and some lesser known (at least to me) places like Place Vendome and the Place de la Concorde.

One comes to this area for the Louvre and the gardens around it. Also some of the busiest Metro and suburban train stations are here, so it's a crossroads. This is the heart of the business and market districts of the old city with some of the oldest buildings and streets.

This is a beautiful part of Paris. There is so much to see and do. There are countless attractions to visit and enjoy. There are also many cafes to check out too. There are unmissable places, such as the Louvre, the Tuileries Gardens, Sainte Chapelle, the Conciergerie and many others.

PROS
* This is the first section- very nice and scenic
* Touristy stuff: Louvre Museum, Tuileries Garden, Sainte-Chapelle and parts of the Seine River
CONS
One doesn't know that one is in number one when one is in number one
"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... because it has the stuff listed above, which I have already reviewed her separately and previously
WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
Being in the first arrondissement is free
WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN/
Sure
ADVICE
You will probably be here and not even know it

This is the place to wander if you have a limited time in Paris. The area is relatively small but is absolutely packed with the "things to see in Paris."
From Place de la Concorde, Rue de Rivoli runs through its centre with the Tuileries, l'Orangerie, the Louvre and river on one side. Now there's a full morning and more for you to take in.
The afternoon offers Place Vendome, where you can spend a few hundred Euro on a pair of shoes or thousands on a dress or suit.
Along Rue Rivoli you can stop and buy souvenirs, see the very expensive Hotel Meurice that served as the HQ of the German occupation command in WWII. You can also visit the beautiful grounds of Palais Royale or explore Les Halles, the massive sub-terranian shopping and transit hub.
In need of more culture? Try the Pompidou Centre where you can become totally confused by modern art.
The first Arrondissement is a great place to start a visit to this great city.

I stayed in Les Halles recently in the 1st for nearly a week. I found it to be very pleasant and central to getting around. There's really easy access to just about anything you'd like to do. So much is within a ten minute walk. It's really super central, so one needn't worry about not having access to all the necessities.

For convenience, accessibility, and generally being a nice part of the city, we are so glad we chose accomodation in this area, even more so when the train strike came into effect, we walked everywhere exploring our area, which we must confess we did realise there was so much to see just in the first, spendings one week in our own hood before venturing out.
Some of our highlights:
Place Vendôme, pretty square top-end accom and shopping, and a monument.
Rue de Rivoli, awesome street to walk along
Rue Saint-Honoré, another nice street,
Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois, pretty church
Galerie Véro-Dodat, covered passage
Pyramide inversée, not something you see everyday
Eustache church, absolutely huge
Eustache fresh market, absolutely awesome, open-Thursday and Sunday, the African food stall is superb, friendly and good value.
We highly recommend basing here.

This is the heart of Paris - right along the Seine and easily walkable. There is so much to see - historic buildings, shops and cafes to suit every taste. There are many hotels in the area so if you wish, you can stay right in the heart, like we did and then branch out easily in all directions.

This is by far the most convenient area to stay while in Paris, it is the middle of the city and one of the most interesting areas. Many museums, churches and sights in this one arrondissement

best to go during mid day, the buildings are very tall and within a square so taking pics later is not great.
