Neighbourhood: Saint-Germain-des-Prés
In Saint-Germain-des-Prés, life is effortlessly chic and all things are beautiful. The main boulevard is dotted with famed terraced cafés, haut-couture shops, ivy-covered railings and fine-dining restaurants. Antique dealers and art galleries surround the fine art school and small museums hide in unassuming squares. The neighbourhood’s namesake church is the oldest in Paris and is the backdrop for talented musicians every weekend. The Luxembourg Gardens house the national senate, splendid lawns and flourishing flower beds. Famous faces and bourgeois Parisians frequent Saint Germain accompanied by the students of Rue Saint Guillaume and Rue des Saints-Pères. This is a neighbourhood where afternoon people-watching from a café or playing cards in a brasserie are a key part of the daily fabric.

The church was stunningly beautiful but the memorial to the 11,000 transported from this church to Auschwitz by the Nazis broke my heart in two. I read the names of the children represented her, between the ages of 18 mo. and the age of six, to remember them and all who died.

Charming medieval church. What makes this one unique among all of Paris' other medieval churches are paintings (dating later than the medieval period), especially the blue ceiling that's decorated like a night sky. The bible scenes painted all around the tops of the arches are impressive too.

A very old church but definitely worth walking into to view the beautiful blue ceiling, windows and the frescoes that adorn her walls, making her quite colourful as far as churches go.

Located on Place De Saint Germain Des Pres is arguably one of the most beautiful churches in Paris ,a landmark feature of the Saint Germain Quarter.
This Roman Catholic Church was originally a Benedictine abbey and founded in the 6th century ,rebuilt in the 10th century and subsequently rebuilt up to the 1800's ,it's a church to most definitely check out if you're in this area of the city and easy to locate on Place Saint Germain Des Pres.

We so enjoyed walking through this church. It is in the neighborhood of some historic cafes so this neighborhood is one to be enjoyed as well. The church has been restored beautifully and the colors are vivid. The pillars draw your eyes upward - stunning! There are many, many historic churches in Paris but this was by far our favorite.

The oldest church in Paris, dating back to the 11th century, St Germain des Pres, is a stunning work of architecture with its beautiful flying buttresses and a bell tower. Enjoyed the medieval frescoes, stained glass windows, and extraordinary columns surrounding the sanctuary.

The exterior of this very old is rather plain, unlike many others with their gargoyles and flying buttresses. But once inside you will be amazed at the brightness of the place, the beautiful frescoes, the blue ceiling....it takes your breath away so beautiful it is. And it is free to the public and I have yet to find it crowded. If one is in the St. Germain area, be sure to stop and marvel at this church/abbey.

Disclaimer: I love a good medieval church.

If you are walking the 6th Abbaye de Saint-Germain-des-Pres. Walk over. The church encloses a great space with classic gothic architecture, medieval religious art, pipe organ, altar and that special sense of peace a space like this offers. When we were there, we were treated to several displays of the pipe organ at work...it was beautiful.

You should take a look.
