I would like to share a passion of mine. I love to peek through fences, gates and entrances. The point in question, is looking through the entrance gate of the palace from the Rive du Faubourg-saint-Honore.
However,a looksee is all i got at this heavily guarded mansion and grounds. The gate that fascinated me has four Ionic columns flanked by windowless walls topped by a balustrade, opens onto a large rounded courtyard. This majestic ceremonial courtyard imparts grandeur to the house.
This palace was formally called Hotel d'Evreux, given by King Louis xv to his mistress, the marquise de Pompadour.
It was in the news recently, not for diplomatic, economic or political reasons ..... but for the austerity- strapped government in an effort to raise money sold 1200 bottles of valuable wines from the presidential palace. This was not because Francois Holland wants to renounce luxury. The reason behind the auction was that there is not enough of many of the wines to be able to serve at banquets.
Some of the cultural proclivities of past heads of states make for surprising reading. General De Gaulle liked Drappier champagne,Mitterrand liked Haut-Marbuzet,while Chirac liked Maxican beers..... it was his wife who increased the wine budget by more then !5%....... interestingly,Sarkosy was a non drinker but entertained at the palace with an Imperial lavishness.
But we digress. There is only one way to see inside the palace. Get an invite to a state dinner or use your diplomatic connections, or better still, wangle an invite to the Bastille Day darden party. Hey!! what am i, a social secretary??
Google and you tube host numerous clips on the inner looks of the palace. It looks grand on a grand-scale. Nearby, check out the Hotel Bristol, where i would love to stay one day and the very posh, quiet heady, retail outlets in the streets surrounding the palace. Renowned couture houses,Jewellers and antique shops fill the streets offering succour to retail frenzied tourists.
Lunch can be very elegant, elegant or almost elegant...... but that's for another review, dear reader.

The Elysee Palace is the official home of the President of France. It is located in the 8e arrondissement along Rue de Faubourg St Honore. A grand old house, it is beautiful and full of history dating back to the 17 hundreds. Guards are in place around the building and glimpses through the gates are pretty much all that is available to the public.

I was surprised that no one has written a review of Élysée Palace where the President of France resides. The address is 55 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré.

It's a gorgeous building and so big! We got lucky and there was some event going on in the garden with the President and some dignitaries so we could see it from across the street into the iron fences. You can't cross over to the other side of the street. The palace is heavily guarded.

I'd recommend going at the top of the hour as they have a changing of the guards then when the soldiers out front change and it's nice to see.

There are tons of VERY upscale and expensive shopping on this street. Beautiful area and gorgeous architecture.

The Palace is open free to the public on Herritage weekend in Sept each year.
We were so looking forward to seeing this very famous palace.
BUT not prepared for the 6 hour wait!! You read right....6 hrs.

As much as we wanted to be there, 6 hrs was way too long to stand in line.

On walking past the Élysée Palace today, there were many police / security personnel around and blocking the footpath and the ability to directly walk past the Palace.

The closest you could get is walking in the other side of the road, with barriers up and stern police stopping anyone from walking on the footpath.

It was nice to look at from the outside though and can only imagine what it would be like inside.

We have just passed by because you can not go insidedue to the security issues. Élysée Palace is the official residence of the President of France since 1848. But once per year the palace is open on European Heritage day but the queue starts at midnight.

This building has been the official residence of the President of France since 1848.
One can see it only from the outside, due to security reasons.
