Neighbourhood: Le Marais
The Marais is a winding maze of multi-faceted streets that beg to be explored. It bursts with small boutiques, historic buildings, cozy traditional restaurants, and hidden parks. Around each corner, you'll come across little gems of architecture spanning the centuries, from understated medieval towers to classical libraries and 17th century splendour. This neighbourhood unites a rich mix of people of all ages, but it's best known for the gay scene mostly in the south and the Jewish community around Rue des Rosiers.

I was really looking forward to surprising my daughter with a spring wardrobe update and went to the 1st floor women's wear. After being ignored by all three staff members -- who had no customers anywhere -- I approached one for help to match with items what I had already bought. I got scowled at for interrupting her personal phone texts, a big sigh and a "What do you want?" I explained what I wanted and she berated me for not being fast enough showing her the colours of the other purchases, rolled her eyes and had the audacity and ignorance to say her brand is "for young people". She called me an old lady, and I guess doesn't understand that it's old people who can afford to shop there. I went to Customer Service to file a complaint of ageism who just shrugged, failed to provide a complaint form and told me to log into my BHV account and complain there. Total lack of concern and regard for their clients, staff is too good to lower themselves to serve anyone, it's a miracle they haven't gone bankrupt. So take your good mood and your money elsewhere. Today their salesgirl cost them over €600 between the sales they lost in-store today plus another €420 of goods I bought at BHV online and which I will now be returning for a full refund. Until BHV can appreciate the financial cost of treating clients like dirt, I'll stick with Bon Marche.

Huge department store perfect for gifts of any kind. Saved me from a rainy afternoon and didn’t expect it to be high end. Turns out it was recently purchased by Galeries Lafayette group.

We needed to pick up a few items for ourselves and holiday gifts for friends. Good selection and prices fitting all budgets. Attentive and helpful staff. It is a delightful break from sightseeing.

DO NOT GO TO THE MAJE SHOP HERE. The staff are extremely rude and unfriendly (avoid especially a staff who is a big bald guy!). I spent a long time trying all the pieces and finally decided to buy 8 items. First, at the cashier I decided not to buy some of the items i originally chose as they were uncomfortable- when I told this to the staff, they immediately gave me a very dirty look and said something under their breath to each other- as if I had done something terribly wrong by deciding to buy less items! Secondly, I asked for them to keep the items for me for an hour- standard store etiquette- as I didn’t want to carry a heavy bag around the department store for the rest of the day. The big bald male staff gave me an EXTREMELY rude and condecending look saying “NO”. In fact, it would not have made a difference since no other person had bought a single item the whole time I was there! I could have just bought all the same items elsewhere as Mage shops are all over Paris and indeed the world, but for the sake of convenience I bought them there. ONLY GO TO THIS STORE IF YOU WANT TO FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE AND AS IF YOU COMMITTED A HUGE MISTAKE BY ASKING FOR SIMPLE FAVORS!

I love, love love Paris and have been annually for the last few years. I always stay at the same hotel: Relais Hotel Vieux Paris on the left bank. Its a small hotel built in the 1500’s and known as the “Beat Hotel” because of the writers who used to live there. The area is close to Notre Dame, Saint Germain des Pres, Bon Marche, etc. Its right near Place Saint Michel with plenty of bus and metro connections. There are many reasonably priced restaurants with great food. Check the web for conccerts in the churches. And if you like jazz, check out Caveau de la Huchette.

This is a great department store for actually finding practical items. There's a large hardware store in the basement in addition to the usual department store options. There's also a large craft area, a good selection of frames.

Attracted by the so called "Paris à table" special exhibition ... we entered this huge shop.

What a deception!

"Paris à table" was a (bad!) joke, nothing nice, special, interesting ... to see/buy!

Wandering around we saw overpriced stuff ... ok speaking also about "staff" = was on their private mobiles, not helpful etc

Never again, plus jamais, nie wieder, mai piu, nunca mas ...

Such a great store and wonderful shopping experience. My husband and I visited store to purchase a table cloth for our daughter and the two people in the department who helped us were absolutely fabulous. They were so helpful, and really helped us to purchase the item we were looking for. Could not have asked for a better experience. They went above and beyond to help us.

The store itself is worth more than 5 stars but I'm giving it only 3 because of the horrible staff there. it's actually the rudest staff I've encountered anywhere in Paris. Bon Marche, Galleries Lafayette - even luxury stores on St. Honore- they are 10x more polite than BHV. Maybe it's part of their training to be this way? Maybe they only hire salty people?

So, I live in Paris and go there often (as I live nearby and it's just a great store) but the staff is pretty bad- especially on the perfume /makeup floor- although it's happened also on other floors (home fragrances). They are so rude, short and will shout at you.

Home fragrance: an old lady asked me if I wanted to pay with carte bleu. I didn't hear her (and Yes I speak French very well) and said "pardonnez-moi, je ne vous ai pas entendu". She proceeded to shout at me in English immediately and said "Are you paying with card or cash!?!". Easy lady- for 1, I'm not deaf and 2 calm down.

Perfume floor- I was looking for a Parisian brand called Essential Parfums. Turns out they don't carry it (I really recommend this brand though- their store is close by BHV in the neighbourhood-FYI with super nice sales people).

So the lady- hearing my accent - starts shouting "It's in the American section probably with the celebrity perfumes". ummm why would it be there? It's a French brand and not tied to celebrities, dummy. Just say you don't know.

Anyway, these are just two examples but I have more. Sadly.

I do find it slightly comical that a sales person acts like they're working with the French president or even God...umm you're a salesperson. Nothing wrong with that but please..it's a department store, get off the attitude.

Saying all of this, I just now expect the sales staff to be rude and a bit ignorant there. But it is a GREAT store full of great things.
