Top ways to experience Belleville Park and nearby attractions

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Belleville / Père Lachaise
At the eastern edge of Paris lies Belleville / Père Lachaise, an understated wonderland of local treasures. Alongside the world-famous cemetery, family-owned delicatessens and cafés nestle between local stores and establishments. The richness of the population here has created a little Chinatown of Asian restaurants, and the area comes to life at night by a funky underground scene. Façades change from one street to another as one passes from white walled provincial homes to tall blocks and reconverted homes. The whole area is an inspirational mix of people from all corners of the world frequented by artists, students, immigrants, and Parisian families. Once home to supporters of the Paris commune, its rebellious nature is now offset by its rural charms.

I enjoyed my visit to Belleville Park. It is a terraced park and you can choose to go up the steps for a direct route to the top or you can meander on the terraced paths. I preferred walking on the paths as there are some lovely trees and shrubs which were very cooling on a warm day and are lush and attractive to look at.

it is a small park with big views.

I agree with another contributor that the park is spoilt by graffiti. Some people might enjoy the graffiti but it is not my cup of tea

On Rue de Couronnes which I walked along to the park coming from the Metro there is a very nice little bread, pastries, snacks and drinks shop called Le Pain du Parc. The two women who served me were really lovely and taught me the proper names for the different types of bread (which of course I've forgotten already) but I was briefly knowledgeable. I bought an excellent little baguette (which is not called a baguette) an apple tart which was delicious, a coffee and some water. I had some soft cheese with me already and so this all made for a very nice picnic indeed in the park.

There is a nice view of Paris including the Eiffel Tower from the park. At the top of the park it looked as if there was a gallery but I did not have time to look in. I think the park is well stocked with trees and bushes and has nice lawn areas to sit on, where I had my picnic.

They had table football sets for public use, but you would need to bring your own little ball. There may also have been a table tennis table there but I might be getting confused with a different park on that point.

I believe I saw both locals and tourists at the park and gardeners tending to the shrubs. it was very peaceful.

When I was there, there was some filming and a very polite French woman asked me to please wait a few moments before going down a particular path as they were just filming something. I think it was a documentary rather than something more exciting. But I always enjoy seeing film crews at work.

Belleville is variously hyped as trendy, artistic, you name it, often coupled with somewhat derogatory references to its former status as waste land, a dump etc, which is needlessly insulting. Yes, areas like Butte Chaumont and Belleville were historically locations for abbattoirs, dumping, various industrial pursuits, but this was long ago when it was far from residential Paris: these activities had to take place somewhere. The Parc de Belleville (and Butte Chaumont) is not just a rubbish dump covered over with dirt, it is a carefully designed park crafted out of and built upon a pretty desolate space. It does not deserve a “wave of the hand” reference to its past by the shallow reviewers. It is an amazing transformation of space, achieved long before it was trendy, achieved by persons with insight and foresight, resulting in a truly beautiful, huge, varied and interesting space with fantastic vegetation, walkways, stairs etc, the apex of which offers an interesting view of Paris.
Parc de Belleville, however, sits within an area of Paris, in the 20th arrondissement, which is not beautiful, but scarred with graffiti, by which I mean not the street art but the alienated vandalism of the disaffected. Not a pretty sight.
The juxtaposition today of workers carefully tending the flowering plants at the top and the graffiti that surrounded them on the surfaces behind on all sides, was telling. Look out from the top over Paris and you see a distant but lovely view of orderliness, landmarks and beauty. Then turn around and you see the marks of squalor, ugliness and disregard for beauty, with scribble over just about every surface; an unattractive desolate place.
I did not feel unsafe, but then it was the middle of a sunny day.
I am glad that I went to see it, but it didn’t match the over-hyped, salivating response that is on the internet. I shan’t go back. If you’re really pressed for time, choose something more rewarding.

After arriving at 10am on a June weekday morning, we entered the park and left again within 5 minutes. Drug/social issues immediately apparent among people on the streets/in the park; sad to see and felt unsafe.

We arrived to the location of Belleville after checking reviews of how trendy this area was with a lot of street art. This was a fail from the start, the area is super dodgy, lots of dodgy people right when you leave the station. It’s a poor area of the city which doesn’t mean it’s unsafe or dangerous, but this was definitely the case. All streets around the station seemed to have works around it and there was no street art worth looking at, just bad graffitis and tags. We decided to give a go to Belleville park after seeing reviews online and what a mistake it was. I don’t really know if things have changed in recent years, but as soon as we got in we felt super unsafe, lots of groups of (dodgy) men spread around the park, some fighting and shouting, we walked there for 5 minutes and we were actually afraid to leave the park, as there were lots of groups of men all around the exits. I never felt unsafe in any of city breaks I’ve been and I literally was afraid I was going to get robbed or worse in that park. This was at 2pm in the afternoon. This is not the place for a couple, defo not for single women, not a place for families. AVOID AT ALL COSTS, this is a dangerous area and don’t get fooled by the good reviews , it’s astonishing that theres no current info about this park and who frequents it, it’s misleading and dangerous. You can get the same views elsewhere without feeling threatened!!! I actually got out of there shaking , not a nice feeling.

I visited the park a couple of times for morning jogging. It was nice with gardens, flowers and several stairways. It is sort of sloppy, so that it was good for the exercising. Several people during those hours either relaxing or doing other activities. Great views of the city from top of the park. It was fine for me for my jogging routine.

The park is quite beautiful but nothing special. However the view from the park is really cool! Maybe not as good as from Montmartre but you should check it of you are around on a sunny day.

Just so relaxing to be able to walk amongst the gardens, plants, trees, and among others who are enjoying the environs.

Wonderful views across the City from the top entrance / area of the Park.
