About
In the oldest house on the hill of Montmartre lived fourteen personalities, among whom Renoir, Valadon, Dufy and Poulbot. Take a step back in time to the glory days of this independent and bohemian quarter through original works by Utrillo, Toulouse-Lautrec and Willette at the Montmartre Museum. The gardens and the atmosphere have a rustic feel to them, making this is a very special site in the heart of Paris.

Away from all crowds behind the church on N sideUncrowded on a Friday in February, informal smallish but lively in every way. Find and read the history of Van Gogh on placards in the stone wall around the corner away from Sacre Coeur also, very illuminating. This museum is a perfect fit for the Montmartre area and vibe. We really enjoyed it. Excellent large exhibit on the “black cat” posters and shows in the area, upon third floor. - vckk1Dallas, Texas43 contributionsNice small museum in Montmartre with great historical perspectiveThis was a nice interlude on our self-guided walking tour of Montmartre. The museum has a nice courtyard and café. The exhibits are on 3 floors in a small house like building. Interesting collection and history of the art and area. Can see the museum and collection in about 1 hr at a leisurely pace, so worth doing if you are in the area.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 May 2024
- David COjai, California80 contributionsWonderful Museum Tells the Story of Monmartre, and some if its Famous Artists and CreatorsWonderful house, museum, garden and cafe in picturesque and historic Montmartre. The collection is wonderfully curated to give you information about the history of this unique area, home, and the artists that lived here. The cute film at the entry, with the lit diarama of the city was helpful to understand what you will see in the museum. Sweet little cafe with a beautiful outdoor area to sit. The collection is special.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 May 2024

This was the best part of my mini break to Paris, it is deceptively big with so much to see. - CathyS10 contributionsGreat museum-gallery in beautiful settingI visited during the Auguste Herbin exhibition which was simply excellent - a fantastic opportunity to discover the works of this unfairly neglected artist, I can’t recommend it enough. The permanent exhibition is also really good - the house and garden are beautiful and contain interesting exhibits on the history of Montmartre and many great paintings from the artists who worked there. There’s also a well-stocked bookshop and pretty cafe with tables in the garden.Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 6 August 2024

What a lovely little museum this is. It gives a very good insight into how life was for artists in their garrets and how they loved around their paintings, with artistic space being more important than living space. Reminded me also of La Traviata! The garden although small was a haven of peace. A little bit expensive for what it was, but thank goodness no one taking selfies here!

After taking a guided walking tour of Montmartre, we ended up atop Sacre Coeur and were a bit turned off by. the crowds. What we really needed was a bathroom and a quiet respite at a cafe period. So we popped in to the museum for those amenities and were very taken by the whole experience come especially the permanent exhibit which was more like a local Civic Museum. The special exhibition on Feminine Surrealism was interesting and well curated although that style of art is not our cup of tea!

This is not as well known as other museums in Paris but it is a wonderful place to visit. It is a peaceful setting with lovely garden spaces - away from the hustle and bustle of Painters Square and not too far from the Basilica. This was once a house and studio that provided a place to create for such artists as Renoir and Suzanne Valdon. She in fact lived in the apartment area here with her son. The buildings are all well maintained and the art in both the permanent collection and the exhibits is well displayed. There is a short film about Valdon and the development & history of Montmartre. Start here and then enjoy the exhibits. For a nice break the Renoir Gardens is where you will find a cafe where you can get a snack or more of a meal and sit at tables in the garden. We really enjoyed our visit here!!

Delightful little garden and museum. The cafe is in a garden and has nice food and wine with plenty of outside seating which is beautiful to sit in on lovely days. The paintings are obviously amazing and the studio of Suzanne Valadon is super to get to see. Definitely recommend a visit

Lovely place to walk to in the centre of the Montmartre area, or you can get the funicular up the hill to Sacre Coeur to make it easier. Reasonable entrance charge. Lots of lovely paintings and info about the history of Montmartre and Sacre Coeur cathedral. Nice garden .
A shame the cafe was not open.

It is not necessary. You can buy your tickets directly at the museum.

Can visitors walk in the vineyard or is that off limits?
Written 11 April 2019
As far as I remember, the vineyards are separated by a wall from the museum's grounds. If there is a connecting gate I am not sure, but most definitely there is no common access.
