The Madeleine is prettier at Night with the front under lights to take a night time photo. You are able to enter into the Madeleine during the day. It is within a 10 minute walk from the Plaza Concorde and there is a Metro station at Madeleine.

Beautiful Roman Catholic Church with exquisite decoration. This place might look small but if you walked around the building then you will be amazed by the size. It is bordered by 52 Corinthian columns with the pediment depicting the Last Judgment. The building was inspired by the Maison Caree in Nimes which is one of the best preserved Roman temples.... I wouldn't say this church is the most beautiful as there are so many beauties in Paris. But this a significant historical building of the 19th century, and is considered the parish church of the upper bourgeoisie due to the location surrounded by expensive shops and hotels. It has a significant pipe organ, and a history of famous organists. There... More

I have been to many astoundingly beautiful churches---St Peter's, Saint John Lateran, Sacre-Coeur, Notre Dame---but La Madeleine I find to be my favorite. The architecture is just brilliant and many visitors cannot believe this structure is an actual parish church. The interior is superbly decorated and I'm sure mass here is beautiful. Located in Paris' 8th Arr. it has an... More

It is very strange to me to see an old church that had no stained glass - no windows at all in fact, but only a few skylights. However, I guess this is because of the Greek column look outside which precludes the windows but which is incredibly striking. In fact, I must have been in the area ten times... More

I hadn't read about La Madeleine before my trip here, and thought it was lovely! The symmetry reminded me of Roman churches and temples. In some ways, I found this comparatively simple church more awe inspiring than Notre Dame. And, the view from the steps is wonderful!

This mammoth church is dark and a bit sinister. Monumental architecture that just leaves me cold. Neighborhood full of expensive shops, some very famous. Some good art galleries nearby.

I visited this church because we share a name but I didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the church and the thoroughness of the exhibit inside! At the entrance, there are cards in many languages that allow visitors to take a self-guided tour around the church and learn about the various chapels and... More

The scale of the church, excellent location, with panoramic vistas from each side, and lavish interior, albeit soot-covered, make this an essential visit - even just to circumnavigate. The Place de Madeleine is having a long-term clean and re-fit of key shops, so expect some mess. Have a coffee nearby, visit Fauchon for pralines (!) and plan your excursion from... More

Staying in Opera / Bourse

Neighbourhood Profile
Opera / Bourse
The neighbourhood around Opéra and Bourse is a belle époque paradise of grand boulevards, refined arcades, and mass-market art-nouveau entertainment. Here, modern day workers continue to take advantage of the legacy that nobility and finance left in the 19th century. Brightly-lit brasseries, theatres, and cinemas sit side by side with French bistros predominating in one area and Japanese restaurants in another. The area is most famous for the Palais Garnier opera house and glamorous department stores.
