The home of Bertillon

This small island is well-known to be one of the most expensive place to live in Paris, still you can visit it quickly and have an icecream at the "real" famous Bertillon!

Older than old. Sweet narrow streets. Fun shops and boutiques. Definitely a good hour or two to be had on Ile Saint-Louis.

Ile Saint-Louis, located in the Seine near Ile de la Cite, was developed in the 17th century and features beautiful residences of the period. Many feature historical plaques of famous people lived there. It is the home of Berthillon ice cream!

On our first trip together in October 2008 Berthillon was closed for the season, so we tried it again on 5/13/17 and this time we were lucky :). Berthillon is the most famous ice parlor in Paris located on Ile de St. Louis, the smaller of the two Seine isles.

Just a bridge away from notre dam cathedral lies this cerene place along the banks of the Seine river. Very romantic stroll. The main street is full of lovely shops and restaurants.

St Louis island is an historical area with splendids buildings. It is a shame that Hotel St Lambert (a true 17th Century palace) burnt a few days before its restoration was completed. We learnt that its gallery was the sketch for Versailles castle Mirrors Gallery. Do not miss Berthillon ice cream shop. Home-made ice creams and sherbets are probably the... More

A beautiful and surprisingly peaceful island in the very heart of Paris. Lovely restaurants, a relaxed street scene (often with impromptu live music) and galleries and jewellery shops. A stunning Catholic Church too. The more sedate sister of ile de la cite (with Notre Dame) next door. Great views of Notre Dame and the river too.

The island was developed under Henri the IV and was the home to some of the grandest mansions in Paris. Very lively in the summer, autumn is a better time to visit. And go to Bistrot Le Saint Regis for a great meal or a glass of wine or a cocktail

My wife and I stayed here twice in a flat we rented through Cobblestones. While not isolated, it gives you a feel for Paris as a quiet town of small shops, galleries, and restaurants. All the "-eries" are there: Patisserie, Boulangerie, Vinerie, Cremerie, Boucherie, etc. and everywhere there are shops selling Berthillon Ice Cream. The greatest source of noise was... More

Staying in Ile de la Cite / Ile Saint-Louis

Neighbourhood Profile
Ile de la Cite / Ile Saint-Louis
Two islands sit in the middle of the Seine at the very heart of Paris. The more majestic one, Ile de la Cité, sparkles with history. This is the birthplace of Paris, the home of the Gothic Sainte-Chapelle, and the site of the prison where Marie Antoinette was held before her execution. Tourists flock to see the iconic Notre Dame and the beautiful bridges that straddle the Seine. Ile Saint-Louis, the more provincial island, welcomes you with cozy traditional eateries, small boutiques, and what some people say is the best ice cream in the city. This is essential Paris from its very beginnings to its modern appeal.
