This is no tourist trap. Auteuil is a storied steeplechase course dating back to the 1800s. We'd never seen a steeplechase and truly enjoyed this first experience. It was an entirely local crowd. And while you'll hear little or no English spoken, this isn't a detriment. The waiters, betting window attendants, and others were patient, tolerant and helpful in our attempts to communicate. The first time bettors window has English-based information and bilingual staff if you need them. The course has got a family atmosphere with children's activities and an informative racing museum for guests. It's clean, beautiful, picturesque, and authentically French to the core. We enjoyed it!
Top 5 Tips:
1. Go to the first time bettors information area to find brochures in English and helpful, enthusiastic attendants to instruct you.
2. Take the Metro to Porte de Auteuil station. A free bus was waiting with door-to-door service to the Hippodrome gate.
3. Cost? We were given free entry coupons on the bus the day we visited. But regardless, posted admission was under 10 euros.
4. Free race guide available at the entry gate.
5. Want the best seat in the house? Arrive early and hungry and you may find premium seats open in the top floor Brasserie for the day! (Or, make a reservation to guarantee a seat there.) We got lucky. Without a reservation we enjoyed a window seat on the finish line while dining on a delicious and reasonably priced lunch. (Reasonable means comparable to what we would expect to pay at home: 2 large meals, bottle of wine, coffee, dessert was under 60 euros.) Since it was cold outside, we watched the races from the Brasserie all day as did everyone else in the local crowd.

Very easy to get to as the entrance to the racecourse is straight in front of you as soon as you exit the metro at Porte d'Auteuil. We went here instead of the French Derby, which was a week earlier this year. We were amazed by the quality of the racing with the likes of Ruby Walsh and Hurricane Fly being there. It wasn't too busy either making it easy to get served and no queue for the loo's! Will definitely be back.

I planned ahead to do something new on this trip to Paris. I have never been to a steeple chase race so I found this track on-line and decided to go.
Getting there was easy on the Metro. You take the 10 towards Boulogne to the Porte d'Auteuil station. The reviews I had read that from there you can take a shuttle or bus to the track but when I looked across the street there was a huge arch entry for the hippodrome. I guess it was the back entry as you walk through a couple of tunnels and emerge right at the grandstands.
They do have a simple brochure available in English explaining that explains how to wager and you get a free listing of all the entries for that day. Hot being able to read the racing form we just went to the paddock to check out the beautiful horses. I would pick out one I liked and plop down a 2 euro minimum bet. I just bet on one horse to win a Gagnant Simple. A place bet there is the same as a show bet at US tracks. I made five bets for the day and actually won one. 10 euros bet, six euros won.
The only disappointment was the talked about restaurant was not open on the Thursday. Actually there were very few people in attendance for a track this size. I guess off track betting keeps them going.
I will go back on my next trip to Paris for sure

Attended the 48h L'Obstacle. 2 days of good quality racing. A 2 day ticket for a seat in the stand overlooking the finishing line was €19. Free racecards on both days. Good food and drink options which are actually cheaper than most of Paris tourist spots i.e 500ml lager €6
Use the tote automated betting machines and there is a English option on there.
Metro station outside the racecourse means it's very easy to find. (Line 10 to Boulogne, station Porte D'Auteuil).

We had the good fortune to be in Paris for the Grand Steeple Chase this pas Sunday. It was a beautiful day, sunny and warm. The racing was marvelous with the fabulous horses making their run in distances between 3000 - 6000 meters. I have no knowledge of the contenders so did not place a bet, but the experience was none the less marvelous. If you're in Paris on a race day, this is a fun way to spend a few hours.

Four Euros to get in, which includes a free bus from the Metro. (Bath racetrack £20 to get in and £10 for the bus). Excellent , clean facilities including numerous restaurants, The cheapest was Euro 19 for a meal. (Bath racetrack £10+ for some grease). Eight top class races with 750,000 in prize money. (Bath, 6 races for less than £12,500). Great views from wherever you sit, and easy to put bets on - you go to the Euro 2 or Euro 10 windows and tell them the number of the horse and the amount that you want to bet on it to win or be placed (or both). Not overcrowded and a relatively cheap way to do something French without any tourists. I put Hippodrome d'Auteuil into Google and got the France Galop website (or something similar) which shows when the meetings are and what time the first race is.

We came for the 1st time, (October 9, 2022) and were saddened , sickened and shocked. In the third race horse (No. 9) was severely injured. It could not stand up or walk, after a falling during a jump. And more than 6 jockeys and their horses also fell in the other races. We have never seen a sport where so many falls, injuries and emergency squads were used. Was the number 9 horse euthanized or was he saved, we do not know
So, we read about venues, like the Hippodrome d'Auteuil. This sport is being outlawed and phased out in many countries.
If we had known how much horse jump racing sports, cause so many risks to racehorses, which result in significant pain, injury, and death, we would not have come.
They don't want you know about the injuries or falls. They held up a huge green screen, so we could not see the final loading of the seriously injured horse. As well, the camera coverage doesn't show a lot about when jockeys fall and horses tumble.
I think Hippodrome d’Auteuil knows the sport of steeple chasing is in decline. And they try to attract family's there, with things to do outside the stands. There have: a horse merry-merry-go round, stuffed horses to ride; bouncy horse game, and even Shetland ponies to ride to attract a new market (i.e. young families) . BUT they do DIVERT OUR ATTENTION FROM THE WHIPPING, STUMBLING, AND THE PAIN TO HORSES. They should be telling us the number of injuries to jockeys and horses and death or euthanasia at their facilities - by facility.

Brilliant afternoon of National Hunt racing at this easy to access racecourse.
Plenty of food and beverage outlets on course. No problems getting cabs after. Go with the kids as there are lots of exhibits with children in mind!
Nearest Metro Porte D'Auteuil. From The Trocadero you can get a 32 bus there too, which gives you a clearer idea of your bearings.
If you have a Racehorse Owners Badge you will almost always get free entry. Be warned tho, you do have to pre book the Owners & Trainers' area even if you have a runner.

On our annual pilgrimage to LONGCHAMP RACE'S ,PRIX DE L'ARC DE TRIOMPHE,we alway's find time to go to this fantadtic steeple chase race course to get us in the mood for the upcoming racing festival at LONGCHAMP.
This is a great racecourse offering the best "over the sticks " racing in France,in a lovely setting ,very cheap to get in and in a area of Paris that has some great pub's, bar's and restaurant's, so after the races you can enjoy spending your winnings if your lucky at the teack.
The facilities in this course are first rate, great panaramic restaurant, were you can enjoy watching the racing, a massive amount ot booths to bet, bar's, souvenir shops, great paddock were you can look at the horses parade, just fantastic. On our last visit my twin brother and I managed between us to get 5 winners, so we had a great day at the races and a fabulous night out in Paris, just magical.
Very easy to get to this racecourse, jump the metro down to PORTE D'AUTEUIL,and as you come out of the metro the racecourse is right in front of you.
Try to get there if you can for GRAND STEEPLECHASE DE PARIS MEETING, a truely fantastic race day, check the web page, just superb day out

This hippodrome has still an old stadium and you can easily see what it would have been like in its hey day. But not much to see here really unless you go on a day that racing is taking place.
