Neighbourhood: Ile de la Cité / Ile Saint-Louis
Two islands sit in the middle of the Seine at the very heart of Paris. The more majestic one, Ile de la Cité, sparkles with history. This is the birthplace of Paris, the home of the Gothic Sainte-Chapelle, and the site of the prison where Marie Antoinette was held before her execution. Tourists flock to see the iconic Notre Dame and the beautiful bridges that straddle the Seine. Ile Saint-Louis, the more provincial island, welcomes you with cozy traditional eateries, small boutiques, and what some people say is the best ice cream in the city. This is essential Paris from its very beginnings to its modern appeal.

The crowds of tourists have started to return post-Covid, and they are looking into the many souvenir shops. This street, which runs down the center of the island, is very charming street because of the 17th Century architecture. We once lived on this street. The area has been completely given over to tourism and ice cream.

We used to live on this street and boy has it changed, not a paradise of ice cream. Ice cream everywhere. It seems every shop, cafe, restaurant sells ice cream. But on this visit, the street was empty because of Covid and the lack of tourists, which is even more bizarre than all of the ice cream.

The main street of this small island, is a popular part of the island with visitors, much shopping and eating to be had, our fave place was the jewellery shop, Bakhtar, the service was friendly and helpful was got a couple of nice pieces there.

Rue Saint Louis is the main street of the same name smaller isle on Seine. It doesn't have so many sights as the bigger sister, but it's interesting to stroll it's quieter picturesque streets.
The beautiful Church of Saint Louis is in the middle of it.

Big Recent Improvement: Traffic is restricted so it is easy to walk down the center of this picturesque street in one of Paris' most historic areas. Now it is peaceful, except in the middle of summer when the tourists flock here in search of ice cream. We used to live here.

We simply enjoyed strolling here and being part of the unique environment. No special favors churches, monuments or museums.... just Paris- and that’s what we liked.

Every time I am in Paris I come back to this street because we used to have an apartment across from the church. Wander to the east end of the island where the crowds disappear and the very old atmosphere comes alive. At the west end, it's all about the ice cream.

Many years ago we rented an apartment on this lovely street and had the time of our lives for 6 months. The island has changed, not for the better, alas, now full of tourists and it has become the land of ice cream with one ice cream stand after another. But still, the architecture is lovely, and the block at the end of the island toward the East is still sublime and quiet.

Buyer Beware - really crummy apartment, elevator broken so 70 steps up to 4th floor (with luggage!) to elevator shaft view, dishwasher broken, no instructions on TV, stereo or washing machine, seating lousy and broken chair. Rancid oils and old groceries in kitchen, no soap and not enough TP...really not good at all...shame on the owner!
