Address
Neighbourhood: Belleville / Père Lachaise
At the eastern edge of Paris lies Belleville / Père Lachaise, an understated wonderland of local treasures. Alongside the world-famous cemetery, family-owned delicatessens and cafés nestle between local stores and establishments. The richness of the population here has created a little Chinatown of Asian restaurants, and the area comes to life at night by a funky underground scene. Façades change from one street to another as one passes from white walled provincial homes to tall blocks and reconverted homes. The whole area is an inspirational mix of people from all corners of the world frequented by artists, students, immigrants, and Parisian families. Once home to supporters of the Paris commune, its rebellious nature is now offset by its rural charms.

There were lots of people out on their daily run, plenty of benches to sit on and loads of amazing landscapes to look at. A fantastic walk and gorgeous scenery - can just imagine how amazing it all looks in the summer.Visited January 2023Written 20 January 2023

This was a great gem. Easy to get to via the Metro. We walked a little bit of the local neighborhood, that was interesting. At the entrances, they have local street vendors. The park is actually very big with some elevation gains. Used by many many French locals. Lots of runners, walkers, parents with their kids. It is definitely loved. With its crazy history, nice to see it got transformed into this lovely spot. We spent several hours here. Walked the hiking path to the "top" for a good view. Then walked around the lake - it has many wildlife, great for bird watching. The park features a suspension bridge and Temple Sybille up high that you can see from the lake shore. Lots of shade so this is a great spot on a hot summer day.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 July 2023

The park is large, beautiful, green, hilly (even steep at times), with some beautiful View-points. Not too crowded, relaxing , a cafe and public rest rooms. An enjoyable green space with mature landscape, ideal for that stroll to clear the mind. Well-lit at night too.

Remarkable landscape with everything blossoming around. It will be a great place for you if you have a few free hours and think that you’ve already seen everything in this gorgeous city of Paris.

Beautiful walking area, but missed the waterfall. Some areas closed for repair. Worth the trek to get there.

If you want to see more green spaces in Paris, I suggest to visit the hilly and big Park des Buttes-Chaumont (Metro station: Buttes-Chaumont). Constructed during the rule of Napoleon III, Parc des Buttes Chaumont is the fifth largest park in Paris and was first opened to the public in 1867. Have the time, comfortable shoes and patience to get there and see at least a part of this picturesque beauty spread over 25 hectares. Of course, we wanted to see and walk along the suspension bridge created by Gustav Eiffel (yes, the very one of the Eiffel Tower). Also the park hosts a stele in memory of the very young Jewish children who died in deportation, the work of the Association for the Memory of Deported Jewish Children.
Unfortunately the famous Temple de la Sybille is a Roman-style monument situated at the highest point of the park, perched some 165 feet above the lake with its Belvedere observation deck is now closed due to reconstruction. It's very smart to take some food with you as it's a great place for a picnic with lots of benches. There is a restaurant in the park, but it was also closed (maybe we got there at the wrong time). Despite everything, we really enjoyed visiting this historical park. The park opens from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. from May to late August, less hours off-season.

We visited this park because it is my boyfriend's favority in the city. I can see why. The view from the top is great, there are many places to sit, enjoy the sun, have a picknic and just take a stroll. It is also really quiet, so a great place to just relax and take in the city. I will be visiting again, next time I am in Paris!

We had a fabulous half day in this park with our children 9yrs & 11yrs. The playground is very small & irrelevant for the ages of my children but we had fun on the suspension bridge and exploring the nearby gullies & woodland areas. We would definitely return again with a picnic rug & basket!

Hi how long would you say to stay for? Is it a full day activity or better off for a afternoon/ nighttime walk. Also are picnics allowed?
Olivier B
Nogent-sur-Marne, France78 contributions
Not a full day activity, rather a two hours walk, maybe a little more if you want to see all the park. Picnics are allowed in specific places, and you can have a drink and snack in a cafe. Avoid sunny weekend afternoons, it's crowded.

Don’t know. Use the Métro! Much more environmentally friendly.

Hi Viktor,
If you're facing the lake and the Mairie de 19eme entrace is behind you, just start walking to your left around the lake and you should find it. Hope this helps! Enjoy Paris :)
