A genuine labyrinth in the heart of underground Paris, the Catacombs were fitted out in the galleries of former quarries. Twenty metres underground, the ossuary houses the remains of approximately six million Parisians, gradually transferred between the

end of the 18th century and the mid 19th century, as the capital's cemeteries were closed for health reasons. Along a tangle of dark galleries, visitors discover a presentation of death with bones arranged in a romantic macabre decor. This unique site is a moving testimony to the history of Parisians and invites visitors on a timeless journey.

Buy tickets ahead of time!! The line can get enormously long... I'm talking hourS in line. When you get a ticket online you can pick a specific time, show up at that time and it also includes an audio guide which makes the experience even better knowing the history behind what you're seeing. This was my second time visiting and... More

This was one of the weirdest things I have ever done in my life. The catacombs were extremely eerie and creepy. Before I get into my experience, if you can, buy the tickets online because I stood in line for about 2-3 hours and let me tell you, it was not fun. Something I don't understand is that they only... We visited this place just a couple of days after the terror attack in Paris in November 2015. Therefore, even if we had booked in advance, the catacombs were nearly empty. We had our two children with us (12 and 8 years old) and they could visit the place free of charge. A different experience, and a real eye-opener.

The line around the corner and down the street made us feel the wait was going to worth it. You walk in, pay and start going down. Down, down, down, down... And down some more! You feel like wow, this must be from ancient times! But... Its just really deep! There are a few bits of information to read and... More

so worth it if you have done the usual sights. Not too many steps and its bigger than you think. A real eye opener. Book on line in advance to avoid the long queues.

The Catacombs is something I have missed on previous trips to Paris- but the line was so long and so cold I nearly gave up. Very glad we hung in there! There is a limit of 200 in the catacombs at any one time so progress through the line is slow. You can queue jump by using the pre bought... More

I booked my ticket on line, was bit confusing as it offered some extra entry to Notre Dame crypt, but this attraction was really not included. Bit of a bummer. The online ticket more expensive than at the door, however! in the price of 17 Euro was fast entrance and audio guide. I was actually first person in (and walked... More

i loved this. i waited in line for 3 hours to get in, but it was so worth it. the stairwell is very narrow so if you are claustrophobic and have a heart condition, don't go! chilly underground and a really cool experience.

Spent an hour or 3 here as I was interested in seeing what catacombs are really like. Arrived midday, midweek in November - only 6 other people in queue. Got audio guide and down I went. It as a bit more structured than I'd imagined - every bit of space used, neatly stacked - like wood piles. Of more interest... More

Got to know interesting facts about Paris history. I would recommend a prior reservation as the lines outside the ticketing counter is lengthy.

Staying in Montparnasse

Neighbourhood Profile
Montparnasse
The namesake tower of Montparnasse dominates over the landscape but the fun part is the throbbing life that goes on below it. Bright lights, busy cinemas, brasseries and diners encompass hidden museums and parks to entertain the masses. Long avenues lead away from the tower to take you to unsuspecting places and historical monuments and treasures. In between lie adorable ivy-covered houses with beams and small gardens to match. Just a short metro ride away from the centre of Paris this neighbourhood has something for every hour of the day.
