Neighbourhood: Belleville / Père Lachaise
At the eastern edge of Paris lies Belleville / Père Lachaise, an understated wonderland of local treasures. Alongside the world-famous cemetery, family-owned delicatessens and cafés nestle between local stores and establishments. The richness of the population here has created a little Chinatown of Asian restaurants, and the area comes to life at night by a funky underground scene. Façades change from one street to another as one passes from white walled provincial homes to tall blocks and reconverted homes. The whole area is an inspirational mix of people from all corners of the world frequented by artists, students, immigrants, and Parisian families. Once home to supporters of the Paris commune, its rebellious nature is now offset by its rural charms.

- Around the World in 80 StaysLondon, United Kingdom115 contributionsAn oasis of peace and tranquillity, right in the heart of Paris!Père-Lachaise Cemetery is the most visited necropolis in the world with more than 3.5 million visitors annually. No wonder, as it’s both a fascinating and beautiful place to visit and is also the final resting place of many famous people who lived and worked in Paris. Some notable interments being composers Chopin & Bizet, poet Oscar Wilde and rock legend Jim Morrison. Not only that, but it’s free entry too! - ThaisSao Paulo, SP320 contributionsA must seeIt may sound awkward visiting a cemetery but this is no ordinary cemetery. Here lie Frédéric Chopin, Oscar Wilde, Claude Chabrol and Jim Morrison among many other well known persons. Most of the people didn't have the chance to meet them personally when they were alive,so that's a chance to do it. Besides that, it's a place of calm and peace. It's the second time I visit there and every time there's something different to see and discover.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 11 October 2023
- Kris VSydney, Australia16 contributionsBest graveyard I've ever seen !This was definitely one of the best things we did in Paris. A historical walk through a picturesque place steeped in history. Even the pathways around the place were awesome! Trying to find some of the famous headstones was challenging, but seeing Jim Morrison's grave was a 30 year ambition ticked off ! Afterwards soaking it all in at Hotel Obododo on Boulevard de Menilmontant with a couple of pints topped it all off nicely. Definitely would go back.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 October 2023
- Wendy GNew York City, New York48 contributionsCreepy and FascinatingWe took the #69 bus here. Takes about 50 minutes. You see not so glamorous Paris this way too. The cemetery was hard to navigate from Rick Steves map so I think there are other places to get better ones. It’s a creepy place but fascinating at the same time. Went to see Jim Morrison’s grave. Bring a little bottle of whiskey and drink it at Jim’s grave. It wasn’t crowded but fans definitely have been there over the years. There are Ravens flying around too. Barnabas Collins didn’t seem so far fetched there. 🤣Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 October 2023

It gave us a positive experience of visiting a cemetery and celebrating all those lives and helped put many things in perspective. Would definately return and reccomend to others. - ceebeeParanaque, Philippines10 contributionsBecky's an excellent guide! I'm so glad I booked the tour.I wasn't sure about booking this tour, if my knees would allow it. But I'm glad I did! A memorable experience! I like cemeteries. I like the peace they give me. While it was interesting to see the famous graves, I particularly was more into the monuments for victims of historical events. 🫶 We had a small group of five, which was perfect. And the pace we took was considerably knee-friendly. Thank you, Becky, for an amazing Sunday morning. Sublime weather. Wonderful group. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 24 December 2023
- Esther M1 contributionPere LachaiseThis was amazing and sad at the same time. It's huge! Wear excellent walking shoes. Start at the top and walk down. If you are looking for particular people, map it out before hand, or take a tour. A lot of the cemetery is run down. If your family isn't around to do up keep, you truely are forgotten.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 March 2024
- Justine K13 contributionsBook a tour with Raphael - he’s amazingThis Paris landmark was amazing! Highly recommended. We went alone but happily stumbled upon Raphael, a private guide who knows every square inch and every historical and hysterical fact about the cemetery’s interred. He led us around and made our visit incredibly memorable. (That’s him on the left)Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 March 2024
- ENRIQUE SANCHEZMiami, Florida2 contributionsBecky's tour is UNMATCHED in Excellence! ♥BECKY demonstrated an encyclopedic knowledge of the countless graves with such delightful explanations and anecdotes that the entire cemetery came alive during her expert tour on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. She gladly answered questions, and added comments to my enthusiastic involvement in her tour. To say that she was outstanding, would be to undermine the careful dedication she demonstrated with each tomb or grave we visited. I must mention that she also had a watchful eye to my own difficulty in maneuvering some of the uneven grounds of the cemetery, for which I am deeply grateful. Serendipitously, we encountered an acquaintance of hers who is equally dedicated during the tour. He was a welcome perk to her already wonderful efforts in the tour. Becky knew of my interest in Music, after the tour, this gentleman graciously showed me the resting places of other famous figures in Classical music. I had an appointment after the tour, so I had to cut my special add-on tour short. Frankly, BECKY'S tour was the early high point of my entire 10 days in Paris. I recommend her with absolutely no reservations. Thank you, Becky!Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 26 March 2024

Just a warning so you don’t make the same mistake we did. We were looking forward to visiting this on our last day, but after taking the metro out here and walking up to the entrance, the guard informed us that the cemetery was closed because it was a windy day and they were concerned about falling branches. We encountered the same thing with the gardens at Musee Rodin being closed for wind the previous day. I’m not sure if they update closures on their website, but pay attention that it may be closed due to weather, even if the weather does not seem that bad to you :)

To say this cemetery is enormous is an understatement. There was no way I was going to tour this immense site on my own.
I signed up for a haunted tour of the cemetery with a guide, who took us to certain grave sites and gave us the creepy and sad backstories of each including Jim Morrison and the tragic love story of Heloïse and Abelard.
I learned so many intriguing facts about the origins of the cemetery, how it came to be, how the grave sites are arranged, and what you have to do in order to be buried here (a waiting list that rivals a Birkin list).
But there's good news: the upkeep (aka rent) of a burial site is not as expensive as you imagine! I was shocked myself, but in a good way!
Befitting a haunted tour, it began to rain as the tour wound down, and the guide cautioned we leave by 6 pm because no one wants to be there after dark.
We scurried out of there ASAP!
Come for a visit but I'd recommend a guide unless you have excellent directional skills. It's too easy to get lost and turned around.

We spent an afternoon here. When we arrived they did not have any maps so I recommend you download and print a map from the website. I did just in case and am glad I did. It gives location of many famous graves, but not all. Even with a map it is a challenge to find your way around and it is a given you will get lost at some point. Still it is like no cemetery we ever visited and even the "non-famous" graves are fascinating.
Check out Oscar Wilde's grave. Apparently, women were putting on heavy red lipstick and kissing the stone. there is now a large plexiglass shield around the perimeter still full of "kisses"

A very large cemetery that is worth a visit on a dry day. Graves of many famous people can be seen. I would recommend taking a photo of the map at the entrance on your mobile to make it easier to locate the various graves.

Beautiful, messy, creepy graveyard!!!
If you're lucky, you'll be approached by Rafael Perez! A funny, creepy, busy little man dressed in black, who suddenly appears in front of you, seemingly out of nowhere. He takes you (via the shortest route; along gravestones, small paths, moss-covered roads, up hills, down stairs, etc., etc.) to the most famous tombs of Père LaChaisse. Because he has a small command of many languages and through his facial expressions and motor skills, he "tells" the most beautiful stories about these deceased celebrities.
At the end of the tour he asks for money. That is definitely worth giving. You have the feeling that he is on Père LaChaisse
lives :)

Have always wanted to go here and see Jim Morrison's grave. This Cemetery has its own metro station. Once inside there are maps of all the famous people buried there.
Its odd but morrisons grave is not on the map. However they will put it on for you. As you get to the grave there is a strong smell of dope from the people there. There is also a security guard there to protect the grave which is fenced in. There are a few JD bottles on the grave with a lot of graffiti around the grave. Constant groups arriving of all nationalities. Just the weirdest grave ever. The graveyard reads like a who is who of French celebrities and is huge.

An cemetery from the 19th century.
Of course a cemetery should not be classified as an attraction, however I still recommend a visit.
Its an impressive site, you can walk the little paths under the trees. Its a quiet yet oppressive mood, especially now in the fall. So take some time, don‘t hurry, stay respectful.
The people burrowed have different religions. Many visitors were looking for the „famous“ tombs, me myself I was more impressed by the ancient art works an by the graves from young people killed in the Bataclan or in the different wars. Those should not be forgotten.
The entry is free.

This is a fascinating place to visit. It is amazing to see the care people took to design a resting place for their loved ones. The endless mini chapels are each unique and an architectural wonder. I imagine there were artists dedicated to the art of designing these chapels at the time. This is a site not to be missed on your visit to Paris. Purchase a map at the flower shop across the street from the Porte Gambetta for 2.50 Euros. You will find all the important graves you seek. The most impressive may not belong to names you seek. Be sure to look for Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein (there is a surprise on the backside of her tombstone), Edith Piaf and her daughter, Moliere, Frederic Chopin (one of the most beautiful tombs), Heloise and Abelard, and Jim Morrison (worse looking tomb-very messy).

I visited Piaf's grave for the first time in several years since the travel ban due to the spread of the new coronavirus.
Even in the bitter cold, beautiful fresh flowers were laid at Piaf's grave and fans gathered there.
There was also Moustaki nearby. Fresh flowers were also laid at Moustaki.
There is a birch tree planted at the grave of Montand and Signoret, and flowers were laid there, which made me realize how popular they are.
On the day, there was an unprecedented cold wave from Northern Europe, and the vast cemetery was bitterly cold.
But the number of visitors continues to increase.
I failed to visit the graves of Chopin and Oscar Wilde.
★It's a huge cemetery, so it's best to decide in advance whose grave you want to visit and pray there.
The closest station to the graves of the above three people is Ganbetta Station on the Metro Line 3. Take bus number 69, which is one stop before the last stop or the last stop.
There is a florist on the approach to the graves that sells fresh flowers for offerings. The souvenir shop has photo postcards of artists such as Chopin and Oscar Wilde, so you might want to pick one up as a memento.
★The toilets are located right at the entrance to Ganbetta and toilet paper is provided.

Beautiful cemetery where a lot of famous people are buried. This place is gorgeous no matter the time of day or year but I suggest going in fall or spring. It’s layered architecture will appeal to fans of Tim Burton’s “Corpse Bride” underworld universe.

Is it allowed to visit the cemetery with a small trolley and a backpack?
Written 10 October 2019
Yes, I had a backpack & saw some women pushing small trolleys & families with prams for children. You should enter at Pere Lachaise Train Station entrance as there are quite a few steps at Gambetta Station entrance. Take your own drink also as there aren’t many water fountains inside. Hope that helps.

Olá!
Que estação de metrô fica perto do cemitério? Sozinho é possível localizar túmulos famosos? Há alguma indicação no próprio cemitério?
Obrigada

Boa viagem!
Abraço!
