Paris is a mecca for architecture buffs...with work by world-famous architecture over the last several centuries. The Art Nouveau movement in Paris has left its mark. And the Lavirotte Building, designed by Jules Lavirotte in 1900, is one of the best! It is truly stunning...and one of best examples of Art Nouveau architecture around. A privately owned building, its exterior is a sight to behold from top to bottom. There are figures looking down at us from the top floors. Arches. Iron grillwork. Ceramic tiles. The entrance at street level is unequaled in its beauty! Over the door is a woman's head flanked by figures said to be Adam and Eve. The wood- and ironwork on the front door is unparalleled in its exquisite beauty! A visit to this site is highly recommended.

It is one of the attractions around the Eiffel Tower. Typical of the Art Nouveau architecture, half over, with a wealth of ornaments and details, sculptures, plant and animal motifs, forged iron grids, columns. Facade decorated with vitrified ceramic sculptures and tiles, oval and rectangular windows.
The door is a separate case, in solid wood and cast iron, all worked, and the handle is in the shape of salamander. It is said that its central part represents a phallic shape.
In 1901 he received the award for the most beautiful facade of Paris.

This Art Nouveau building located on 29 Avenue Rapp in the 7ème arrondissement was design in 1898 by a French architect called Jules Aimé Lavirotte. The other buildings he designed to much acclaim are located in:
151 Rue de Grenelle, 7th arrondissement (1898)
12 Rue Sedillot, 7th arrondissement (1899)
3 Square Rapp, 7th arrondissement (1899)
134 Rue de Grenelle, 7th arrondissement (1900)
29 Avenue Rapp, 7th arrondissement (1901)
Ceramic hotel, 34 Avenue de Wagram, 8th arrondissement (1904)
169 Boulevard Lefebvre, 15th arrondissement (1906)
23 Avenue de Messine, 8th arrondissement (1906, top floors added later, doing away with Lavirotte’s garden roof)
6 Rue de Messine, 8th arrondissement (1907)
2 Rue Balzac, Franconville, Val d’Oise (c.1907)
He also worked in Tunisia:
Chateau at Chaouat (Tunisia, c.1904)
Villa at Chaouat (Tunisia, c.1904)
Restoration of the Church at Chaouat (Tunisia, c.1904)
The rest of Avenue Rapp is more classical, yet elegant. A large Orthodox churches is being build at the moment on that avenue, close to the Pont de l'Alma and to the Quai Branly Museum.

A few years ago we rented a flat around the corner from this lovely building. My husband and I are both architecture buffs who like to take photos and we had a field day here. The lines of this beauty are distinctly feminine and sensuous. We followed our photography session with a long visit to Musee D'Orsay where we oohed and ahhed over the Art Nouveau furniture, imagining what it would feel like to own it and live at 29 Avenue Rapp.

It's beautiful! This is not a major sight in Paris, but it's a very quick walk from the Eiffel Tower and not to be missed if you like Art Noveau architecture. I saw it today! Also check out the incredible back of this building (in the alley) with tremendous gate and view of the Eiffel Tower. a treat!

For architectural buffs and those who appreciate Art Nouveau, the building at 29 avenue Rapp in the 7th arrondissement is a must-see. The flamboyant facade with erotic symbolism, such as the unusual front door, won first place in the 1901 Paris facade competition. The stone and bricks show off myriad glazed tiles; balconies feature lovely ironwork; and there are myriad other decorations. I have visited this address on more than one of my Paris visits and often found details that I missed before.
The building is quite close to the Eiffel Tower, so I would recommend a combined visit. The rue Cler market street is also nearby.
For those who have already been to the tower, consider a self-guided walking tour of Art Nouveau in the 7th and some of the other arrondissements. I have used "Paris Art Nouveau" by Janine Casevecchie on some of my walks.

This is a stunning building that is nothing like you will ever see - we visited it on our last day in Paris, and were very glad to have made the detour. As previous reviewers have said, it is only 5 minutes away from the Eiffel Tower and its meticulous detail make it a must visit for any architecture buff.

My husband and I stay in the 7th arrondissement during our annual trips to Paris. It took several years, however, to discover 29 avenue Rapp. It is spectacular, an amazing example of Art Nouveau architecture. Now, during each trip, we take the 15 minute walk to the building, and still find it breathtaking. It's close to the Eiffel Tower so even if you're not staying in the area, it's worth a visit. Be ready to take many photos.

Yes it is a famous location for the design of the door, but if you get deep into Paris you will see many locations with similar beautiful architecture. Was frankly disappointed and spent a max of 3 mins there. See it only if you are passing by, but don't take the time out of your travels just to go there for it alone.

Quite by accident my husband and I happened by this lovely building as we strolled the area on an afternoon. I first spotted the incredible door, then realized the whole building was special. The details, down to the door hinges, are beautiful. Just one of Paris' hidden gems!
