- Patricia O300 contributionsBeautiful inside and outIf I had to pick a chateau to live in, this would be my pick. I am attracted to gardens and I enjoyed the variety of spaces to see here. There are formal gardens, symmetrically landscaped areas, and then some hidden gems farther out. The family feel of the interior also impressed me. There was the history of previous owners and recent photos of the current ones. The chateau reflects the efforts of the last three generations to maintain and improve this property.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 October 2023
- 10OrchardWorcester, United Kingdom579 contributionsGardens well worth the detour at any time of yearEven in October, the gardens were colourful and vibrant. The views from the belvederes were spectacular. There is lots of information on the walkways to explain the layout and the planting of the gardens. The vegetable garden was spectacular even at the end of the season, I loved the pumpkin display! Free parking makes this a very affordable site to visitVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 October 2023
- Ann CNashville, Tennessee3,335 contributionsChateau de VillandryBeautiful gardens, even in October. We arrived early/off season and had the garden to ourselves. Disappointed to see bell peppers rotting on plants, seems wasteful to not pick. The plants that make up the maize seemed unhealthy, I don't think the leaves should have been off in early October (?) Free parking lot with toilets located .3 from entrance.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 November 2023
- KriszediCluj County, Romania271 contributionsSpectacular place!I loved this place! It is simply spectacular the castle itself and the gardens around. The area is huge, it needs couple of hours to visit but you will not regret it. The garden-views from the upper terrace of the castle are breathaking. There is also a huge parking place, a very nice restaurant with tasty and very well presented plates. I definitely recommend this place for visit!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 June 2024
- The Infinity G75 contributionsOne of three "not to miss" chateaus in the Loire ValleyThis is one of three places you should see when traveling in the Loire Region of France. There are two exceptional elements of this chateau that distinguish it from others - the art gallery and the gardens. Plan at least 2-4 hours.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 June 2024
- Diane The TravellerUnited Kingdom78 contributionsImmaculate gardensA really nice château with a self-tour route. The guide you are given moves you through the château and gives you plenty of information. The gardens attached to the château are immaculate and very well presented and are best viewed from the château terrace. There are restaurants and gift shops just outside of the château as well as complimentary parking.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 August 2024

We visited on a scorching day in June. As it was so hot we opted to visit the gardens only which we felt was very reasonable at €7.50 per person. Fast entry, access for prams, wheelchairs etc. The gardens are very relaxing and medium sized. You could spend half a day here but we found 2 hours sufficient. There is a small maze and park for young children and plenty of benches to take a break. Parking is available just opposite the chateau and a small cafe.

Villandry is well worth a visit. We decided to just take in the gardens, 15 euros for 2 people. Woodland, pools, topiary, herb & vegetable garden with fruit trees, manicured lawns & a maze. Spectacular. Even more joyful was seeing the amount of housemartins that were nesting among the property eaves, even some nest boxes had been provided. Watching the fledglings taking their flying lessons was an absolute delight. Thank you Villandry for supporting these magical little birds.

If you love topiary, diverse and beautiful gardens in full bloom and places for quiet reflection, this is the place for you. Take your time and appreciate the organization and understanding of each different garden, water, sun, maze, vegetable, herb, all beautiful. The castle is nice but the reason to go in is to appreciate the views of the gardens from above. Imagine the centuries of owners gazing upon the immaculate grounds

There is a free car park close to the entrance. I suggest you buy your tickets ahead online to save time.
We did go inside the chateau to see what is was since we were going we wanted to see it all. There were a few rooms that were interesting. The children’s bedrooms, the dining room and the oriental drawing room with the Mudejar style ceiling were nice.
The inside can use some work and it isn’t as nice as some of the other chateax. Part of going through the inside is to see the views of the landscapes from above especially of the gardens. You gain a better perspective of how extravagant the gardens are from above.
The gardens are considered to be some of the finest in France so that is why most people go. They were stunning and it was well worth the visit.
Just use the brochures they provide you as audio guides weren’t available.

We can’t say enough good things about our visit to Villandry. The chateau and the gardens are exceptional. We highly recommend taking the guided tour first since one learns so much about both the house and the gardens. Much praise to Henri who was our guide on May 2nd. Plan on spending 2.5 to 3 hours in order to take it all in.

If you are traveling with your dog, you can buy a ticket just for the gardens and skip the interior. The gardens are incredible. It was my favorite Loire chateau for that reason. There are multiple gardens with different geometry, colors, and landscapes. You can also walk in the forest. For dog owners and garden admirers, this is the place for you.

The gardens are stunning and well maintained but we found the whole experience stressful and exasperating because of the extremely poor accessibility for wheelchairs. Disabled parking was not well labelled, though I see for the website that there is some. Although the entrance staff kindly suggested we borrowed the Villandry wheelchair which had slight larger wheels than ours, the marked route for wheelchairs included long stretches of rough cobbled stones, and routes around the gardens which were mainly obscured by tall hedges. We ended up carrying the wheelchair up and down flights of stone steps and ended our tour of gardens hot and bothered (30 degree weather didn't help). Thankfully we stopped to have lunch at the onsite restaurant which was terrific, we all absolutely loved the imaginative and delicious food.

We loved this Chateau and Gardens. We were on a 5 day tour of the Loire Valley and this was definitely our Favorite stop. The Chateau was bought in 1906 by an American Woman and her Spanish husband and they proceeded to restore the Chateau and spectacular Rennaissance Gardens. The great grandson of these owners still owns the entire Chateau and grounds and he has done a spectacular job keeping them up. This Chateau should be a must see for anyone travelling through the Loire Valley.

I ain't a Gardens, Botanical gardens and other associated attractions fan.
Therefore, I even hesitated if to come here at all, as there were 7 others Chateaus on our list. What a mistake it would be, Thank God I put it on the list.
We arrived pretty late, around an hour before closing time, so a kind staff lady told us we could only visit the gardens.
After buying the tickets you climb a staircase leading to an elevated platform above the gardens. There - you're blown away. It's a spectacular site I've never seen such. And - it was raining, I can only imagine how it looks like in sunny weather.
We were the only one at around 5 PM, had the gardens to ourselves, walked all around them, up and down and around, until the guards told us we had to leave.
The only downside is that all other Chateau gardens we saw after looked average and nothing special.

I was wondering how another chateau could top Chenonceau and Chambord, but this one was their equal in another way. This more domestic chateaux was full of interesting things. It was more like a National Trust property in England in its smaller scale. It seemed liveable. However as you climbed up the chateau you saw ever better views of its gardens. Normally, I wouldn’t that bothered about going to a garden, but Villandry’s gardens were impressive. They are beautifully laid out in symmetrical patterns and were colourful in mid September. The chateau and gardens weren’t very crowded either. If you only visit three chateaux, this should be one of them.

ciao, visiterò i castelli ad agosto in bicicletta. è presente nel castello un deposito per le biciclette? inoltre, è possibile depositare gli zaini?
Written 1 August 2018
Yes I believe they have places to secure your bikes, many bikers in the Loire Valley. I don't recall a place to leave your back pack, doesn't mean there isn't just do not remember. Have fun, lovely place to visit!

How much time do we need to view tge gardens and would you suggest morning over afternoon?
Written 17 July 2018
Definitely visit in the morning as all the coach parties arrive in the afternoon and it gets very busy! Chateau needs about an hour and the gardens 2 hours to see it all nice and leisurely.

Could you tell me how to get to Villandry from Tours,I am not keen to do an organised tour I don't think they would allow my 70 yr old Mum to ride a motor scooter. We are visiting in June.
Written 7 May 2018
It's less than half an hour from Tours to Villandry by car/taxi. There is ample new parking within walking distance (level) to the chateau. There are lots of stairs within the chateau itself, but the admission is worth it just for the gardens, which in June should be beautiful. The gardens are readily accessible for mobility scooters or wheelchairs.
