We just enjoyed a relaxed stroll though the old town soaking up the atmosphere and admiring the views.

we did not go in to any of the main castle buildings, this seems to be a 5 star experience for many visitors who do this

Really interesting history and well planned out in a beautiful small town.Well marked streets for easy navigation. Plenty of shops and restaurants but many closed on Sunday and Monday.

I was really disappointed with my visit. Having visited lots of other chateaux in the region I was expecting something similar. Unfortunately not. Entrance fee 13E Got you in and also to the dungeons. My main issue was not being able to read about most if the things on view. You may say, it's in France so expect explanations in French!? However when we came out we were told about an app we coukd gave downloaded before entering that would have explained everything. Surely the lady taking our money (who had a badge on saying she spoke English) coukd gave mentioned it. Even if she had pointed to some written document that we could have read before going in. Anyway, it was very sparsely furnished and only a few rooms you could go in. The dungeons were really just ruins but you got a feel on just how big and deep these must have been all those years ago. So, yes I was disappointed. There are many more chateaux to visit for the same price that are far more attractive and interesting.

This was our second visit to Loches we love all the restaurants cafes and bars in the town
The river that runs through it is a nice place to just sit and watch the world go by
Loches has some lovely little shops and when the market is on a great place to get local items like paintings and sculptures

Please beware that dogs, even handbag sized and carry on are NOT allowed on either sites, Donjohn or castle. Pity.

It always surprises me how little attention Loches gets in terms of Loire Valley advertising on the international tourism scene, it is a truly magical medieval city that is beautiful, has some amazing history, and wonderful people. It is true that it does take a little digging to get all of the amazing details (I wish that there was a bit more organisation from the tourism team in terms of bringing the history to life) but really a great city.

The problem is that the royal lodgings consist of 4 unfurnished rooms. The information is good but you have little sense if of the way the rooms were used.

The dongon floors are missing and while you can climb for the view, that's all there is. There is a smaller tower which was used as a prison for aristocrats and this was a bit more interesting. Overall, compared to, for example, azay le Rideau, it's overpriced.

Beautiful building and setting. However, this is probably best seen with a guided tour, as the displays do not really bring back to life the place as well as they could. Nonetheless interesting.
Note that the entrance ticket is also valid for the Donjon nearby.

Spent a good 6 hours in Loches & 3 were spent walking around the Royal City. The keep was the best area but if you don’t like heights steer clear. Climbed about 100 steps & you get a great view across the city. Great place for children to wander around & most of the presentations were in French & English. Most of these were about the 14th & 15th century French history. Parking could be a pain but we found a free one a small walk from the town centre. You need to be relatively fit as there are a lot of steps & slopes to climb up to get there.
