One of the best cathedrals in the Loire Valley. Also it is worth spending some time around in the nice surrounding. After a week in the valley though... there are very similar cathedrals so it is not a must and similar ines can be found...More

Chartres itself is pretty enough but the cathedral is stunning and well worth planning a detour for whether on an outbound or homeward trip. The cathedral seemed a little busier in the evening but opens from 0830 and we went in the morning - a...More

Thank you for your comments! Chartres is unique in many ways, one of which is that the stained glass is 82% original to the 12th and 13th centuries. The Cathedral also has an abundance of carved statues including the 3 entrance portal sculpture programs and...More

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres is a Gothic Catholic church constructed between 1194 and 1220. The cathedral has been well preserved. The majority of the original stained glass windows have survived intact, while the architecture has seen only minor changes since the early 13th century. All...More

Thank you for your review! The stained glass windows are 82% original to the 12th and 13th centuries, and is the largest collection of stained glass from this time. The Cathedral was spared by American Colonel Welborn Griffith, who was later tragically killed later that...More

Chartres Cathedral is magical, soothing, spectacularly beautiful. I especially gravitate to the gorgeous stained glass. (Bring binoculars or a good telephoto lens.) Parking is difficult but the effort pays off and then some.More

The first thing after the grandeur you will notice is the marvelous Gothic tower and different architectural styles. It is a World Heritage Site and is the “high point of French Gothic Art”. Centuries are just numbers here, believed to be built in 4th century...More

Thank you for your comments and beautiful photos! The restoration of the nave and choir have been fully completed, and for now there is no scaffolding on the interior! The exterior Chapel of Saint Piat is currently undergoing work. The stained glass windows here have...More

The restauration is a huge mistake. Supposedly intended to recreate original 13C appearance, but by their own admission huge parts are not being restored --- statues will not be painted, outside not painted, very non-original 17C faux-marbre colorings are retained at the altar, highly-aged stone...More

Thank you for your comments! The restoration has garnered a lot of feedback, which we welcome! The restoration is administered by the DRAC, and as with most things, decisions have to be made. These decisions are not made lightly and they come from highly qualified...More

Saturday afternoon we stopped off in Chartres to break our journey. Having seen this magnificent cathedral every time we journey through France we thought it about time we stopped and explored. We weren't disappointed. Whilst it's structure dominates the surrounding countryside, once in the town...More

Hello. You can get on Metro 4 at Odéon towards Montrouge and get off at Montparnasse. There are trains about every hour between Paris Montparnasse and Chartres. Hope that helps!
