- 1MichelleFort Lauderdale, Florida254 contributionsJaw dropping CathédraleA miracle to see the amazing art and architecture from almost a thousand years ago. It is like the incredible treasures of ancient history. But this Cathédrale is very much alive. All of the works of a museum. Just a walk through will be worth it, but try to do more. Tours are offered. Added bonus, nightly illuminations of the exterior. Beautiful!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 October 2023
- RonL40Utica, New York3,720 contributionsSpectacular. Breathtaking. A wonderMy favorite cathedral. The perfect size, retaining a sense of the sacred without having been converted into a museum. The stained glass windows are, in my opinion, the most spectacularly beautiful component of the church. The interior choir screen is marvelous. And the exterior is a masterpiece of the Gothic. Each of the three portals is better than the others! So much more interesting, and approachable, than other portals that may be larger, or more ornate, but just not as beautiful. Chartres combines everything one might want to experience in a cathedral: the sense of centuries-long purpose, the majesty of the art, the awe for the craftsmanship, and the feeling that one really is in a church.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 November 2023
- L PHowell, New Jersey99 contributionsAwe inspiringBeautiful and awe inspiring. I got the audio-guide in English. It is very informative, but there are currently some renovations that cut off certain parts of the tour. Also, the “crypt” tour, only available in French this time of year, was very well done, if you understand French. They give you a less entertaining paper description in English also. But the crypt is really just the basement of the cathedral, has its own history and features, but no skeletons or such.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 27 November 2023
- Wanderer01771222430Dublin, Ireland13 contributionsAn Architectural MarvelIt is hard to believe that in the 11th century people has the materials and the engineering skills to construct this stunning edifice. Even a non-believer like me can feel the presence of the sacred in this ancient space. The train ride from Paris to Chartres is nice too.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 31 January 2024
- HENsslHouston, Texas97 contributionsWowI wasn't really expecting to be as moved as I was by the cathedral. It is quite the experience to see the stain glass and the intricate detail which abounds throughout the structure. If you are in Paris this is a very easy day trip and it was not crowded at all for us. The stain glass museum across the street which details each panel is also worth a visit. Light a candle.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 31 May 2024
- Debra G54 contributionsSee all three churches in old town chartresLoved our walking tour of Chartres. Start at the Cathedral (since our hotel was next door), then navigate to St. Aignan Church with beautiful patterned paintwork, then to St. Pierre church, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. End with a walk along the canal back to the medieval town center.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 June 2024

Situated on the hill overlooking Chartres and the surrounding area, this is quite a majestic cathedral with amazing stained glass windows telling all manner of stories. You can self tour for free, or pay for a guided tour that can include access to the upper areas - just be aware that means steps. It's an active church as well, so be respectful especially during services. Much history and architecture to be seen when touring this special place. Take your time and enjoy.

Known for the stained glass windows, I was just as impressed by the series of sculptures of biblical scenes that surround the alter section of the cathedral. Most days there is a tour in English at noon.
Chartres is not part of most tour company itineraries, but you can get there easily from Paris by train, about an hour ride, around 40E round trip. There is about 1 train per hour. Check the schedule for the return trip to avoid just missing the train.
The town is worth exploring for an hour or two before you head back to Paris.
If you want to see stained glass, and can't fit in a half-day to Chartres, check out the St. Denis Bascillica. It is equally as beautiful.

Some thirty-five years after my first visit to Chartres, I returned, late on a September afternoon. The streets were crowded with rush-hour traffic, and friends in Paris were expecting us for dinner. As the time dwindled down, I became increasingly anxious about how little time I would have for this return visit.
Arriving at the Cathedral, I found myself in an atemporality, all frustration dissipated. Light entered through the recently-cleaned west rose window, turning the beams to jewels. I looked for the "Shoulders of Giants" window, which I'd used as a metaphor throughout decades teaching undergraduates. Unfortunately, that side of the Cathedral was still under restoration, and it was covered. But I did run into the scholar Malcolm Miller, whom I'd met on my first visit, and I thanked him for his lecture back then on the "shoulders of giants," a theme that has become a continuing one in my life.

We were staying overnight in Chartres en route to the Dordogne and made the 10 min walk up to the cathedral and old town from where we were staying. We approached it from a narrow side street and the view as you entered the square surrounding it was stunning. Enormously impressive due to its sheer size and associated architecture, it really does take your breath away. We arrived at about 7.15pm and as it closes at 7.30pm we only had the chance for a quick 15 minute visit. The interior is huge but simple and open with vast soaring pillars and vaulted ceilings way above your head. Beautiful side chapels and an elaborate carved altar piece add to overall effect. There are a number of restaurants and cafes surrounding the building from where you can sit and enjoy the views of this fabulous building. We left there and ate at a fantastic bistro called O Tire Bouchon down an adjacent side street the Rue de Lait I think. Definitely well worth a visit!

The city of Chartres has made it so difficult to get to the cathedral it is ridiculous. No signs and no directions. It’s a wonder anyone finds it. You are forced to park in underground chaos and when you come out you must wander through a maze of streets and shops asking directions. We are in our 70s and by the time we found it we were completely exhausted. The city planning obviously did not include any consideration for the older generation, handicapped, or ill folk. It amounts to discrimination and I am shocked and disappointed.

We only had time for an early evening visit to the Cathedral (6.30) before a meal adjacent to the Cathedral at Cafe Bleu which was excellent. Mass was being celebrated and that only added to the experience of this sacred space. The frieze around the altar illustrating the birth, life and death of Christ was amazing to see. But best of all was the evening sound and light show. We actually started with the illuminations on the bridges and washing houses further into the town and then worked our way back to the Cathedral. All the displays were stunning and well worth the wait. And of course they were completely free.

This is one of the great cathedrals of the world, not due to its size but having the greatest examples of stained glass anywhere. Highly recommend reading Malcom Miller’s books before you see it. He is the foremost expert on this historic building and it’s amazing windows and exterior design. His protege, Ann Marie Woods gives daily tours but not year round. Check the website for the American Friends of Chartres for the schedule. I highly recommend the tour. She will point out things that even the books do not cover and her sheer joy in presenting what she knows about the cathedral is delightful. By the way, do not expect a dingy and dark interior. The ongoing restoration has revealed the original light colored walls that give the feeling of joy on entering that those making the pilgrimage to Chartres 900 years ago must have felt. Well worth the train ride from Paris.

Stopped at Chartres on the way to the Mont Saint Michel.
The town was beautiful. Enjoy the sheer scale and grandeur of the cathedral. The interior is breathtaking.. The stained glass is like nothing you’ve ever seen. A National Historic Monument, a marvelous example of high Gothic art.

It's one thing to read about Chartres cathedral, quite another to see it -- as one does, say, from the arriving train, with a view of the spires literally soaring above the town itself. Current restoration work (dangerously approaching over-restoration) does nothing to obscure the sheer magisterial glory of the place. Much has been written about the precious stained glass, but for this visitor the prize and revelation was the enormous carved choir screen, which wraps around nearly half the length of the nave and is adorned with exquisitely carved scenes from both Old and New Testaments. The figures are so lifelike they seem ready to step off the screen into the cathedral itself.

Amazing cathedral - be sure to get the audio tour to fully appreciate the architecture, stained glass, etc. It took at least two hours to do. The contrast of the cleaned walls and ceiling compared to other interior parts not yet restored was stark. Not many food options in the area. Easy day trip on the train from Paris-Montparnasse station.

Can you still climb the towe at Chartres Cathedral?
Written 21 August 2024
Hi there! I’m interested in an English tour, though on the site it is hard to gather when these tours are available in 2022 with covid. It seems that there is something on at 3pm daily, but is a tour possible earlier in the day? Outside mass times of course. Just a bit confused as it seems the cathedral is open from 8:30 but first mass isn’t until 11:45. Thanks!

How high does one have to climb to reach Chartres cathedral?
Written 8 September 2019
Yes, there is flat walking in the middle of town. You can walk down to the river over one of the Lumiere walks which isn't very steep and is all paved.
If you mean can you climb the towers, I didn't notice the towers were open to the public.

Buona vacanza!

I read on the cathedral's website that tourists can't visit the interior during service times (which makes total sense, of course). We will be visiting on a Sunday. Does anyone know approximately how long the 11am mass lasts? Our goal is to arrive afterwards so we can see the entire space.
Written 11 October 2018
Hello,
Yes, David M is right. Mass ends around 12:15.
