You do wonder sometimes how the economy of what is a small village ( now some 500 people) could ever build this thing. There are fantastic views across the countryside. The interior of the building is rather sparse. The relics which drive the development of...More

With origin in 9th Century, the basilique arrived at its magnificant state in the 12th century. To me, the stern building is on the outside more impressive than inside, where at the time of the visit stood hundreds of simple modern chairs for a concert.

One of the most beautiful churches I visisted. We had a relaxed visit strolling uphill past the tourist shops, The vistas behind the church were as breathtaking as the climb itself. The church with its roman, Cordoba style arches and gothic chapel even made our...More

the whole abbey is beautiful, its gardens are tranquil, its location at the top of the hill affords great views, but teh most special thing is the "Bible in stone" - the capitals/tops of the pillars are carved with depictions of stories from the Bible...More

Visiting this Basilica was just the most humbling experience for me. The light is beautiful and one can sit quietly and enjoy the peace and the space. It is well worth getting the guide and architecture plan upon entering so that you can make sense...More

Our first night in Vezelay, we had the privilege of attending a violin concert at the Basilica, an amazing introduction to the beauties of the Basilica. The structure is steeped in history and has an emotional power that more elaborately decorated cathedrals lack.

Getting there at 8am before end of morning Laude was nice. Singing monks and sun light together are really great. Try to get a guide that will take you outside ( terrace and old cellars for pilgrims)

Positive: - the surroundings and landscape arriving from any near city - the village is little and full of atmosphere, specially during the late afternoon and night - the church is amazing in its mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architecture Negative: - not free parking...More

This is a very beautiful church with a wealth of amazing stone carvings telling biblical and classical stories. When we visited, students were offering very informative guided tours, much appreciated (and in English!)

Unfortunately it's at least a 7 hour drive from Cannes to Vezelay. Even going by train to Dijon and then hiring a car, it's just not possible in a day, let alone within the time you have available. If you're interested in... More

Vezelay is not easy to get to without a car, and it's a long way from Cannes. A TGV train to Dijon and then hire a car would be about the only way to do it, and even then you would spend most of the day travelling. The... More
