Very interesting visit to a magnificent piece of engineering. Its a bit tricky to find if you use sat nav and the map here on TA shows the visitor centre in the wrong place. Basically as you come over the dam east to west turn off into the carpark on the left and park up in the visitor area just... More

The Rance is a special hydro-electric station, as it is based on the tidal effect. This coast of Brittany is known for the tidal effect and this station is between the see side and the lake side. Visit is free.

Seems to be a way to generate electricity from tidal power - and at the same time its a bridge for cars - nice job

The Rance Barrage and tidal power plant was inaugurated by General de Gaulle in 1966, having taken six years to build. It consists of a 750 m long road way, a sea lock and lifting bridge to allow boats to pass up and down The Rance. Tucked away under the roadway are the 24 turbines of a tidal power plant.... More

A massive lock on the edge of a dam on the river Rance in Brittany. Great experience going through the lock on a 37 ft sailing yacht. French engineering at its best

It used to be a hydro electric dam but that has been decommissioned and now it is a bridge over the Rance. Quite interesting when there is a boat waiting to go through the lock but apart from that....

It's interesting in its own way, more so if you have an engineering interest in water structures, but otherwise don't make a special detour to see this

As well as the little visitor centre, you can spend ages looking at the sea, the bay and the whirlpools. The car park is free and the views are spectacular.

Amazing sight when they let the sea in to turn the turbines. Less so when the tide is going out. The river was like a rough sea , clouds of spray. Great
