It's astonishing that during a construction dig that there discovered an entire roman village buried underneath in the medieval town of Perigueux. That amazing archaeological find was then preserved with a glass structure designed by world renowned architect, Jean Nouvel who's the local son of the region. The unique nature of this museum is that it allows guests walking on... More

To echo most other reviewers, if you are interested in history then this is a brilliant museum. The modern glass building looks exquisite from outside, and has a lovely tranquil feel inside, allowing lots of light in to set off the villa and exhibits. There were very few visitors when we visited, a weekday in September. The audio devices are... More

Curiously, although we spent more than five years living nearby, and Perigueux was our main shopping centre, we never discovered the Roman museum on the other side of the railway tracks until returning to our old haunts for a holiday, this summer. We knew it was there, as there are ample signs, and you can hardly have missed seeing the... More

Striking contrast between the Roman era ruins under a hood by the famous architect Jean Nouvel. Especially well done scale models of Roman houses and other buildings

This spectacular modern glass Museum designed by Jean Nouvel has not only enhanced but preserved the remains of the villa from the Gallo-Roman fortified village. The upper level of museum provides you an excellent view of the overall layout of the villa. On the lower level, there are elevated walkways that allow you to fully explore the remains of villa.... Very good exhibit - can't understand why there are criticisms about the lack of English translation - we hired an audio guide and it was fine. We spent 1.5 hrs here and it was worth every Euro.

Actually this is more of a large compound not a just a house. There is an audio guide that helps explain what you are looking at and some insight into the Roman way of life. There are amazing wall murals, mosaic floors and numerous artifacts including pottery and kitchenware. It is surprising that these remains were buried for hundreds of... More

Lovely cool spacious museum with good exhibits but all signs are in French and the multilingual headsets provide minimal information. That said, much of it speaks for itself and it is an actual excavation with some great artefacts.

This display of the Roman village was excellent. There were some excellent artifacts and the building allowed you to view the items and also the ruins. One nice feature was a representation on some iPads of what the rooms would have looked like.
