This was my second visit to Commarque (once on foot hiking, once by car) and both times I was immediately struck by what was almost theatric staging of an imposing ruin trailing down a monumental hillside. Almost a thousand years on history peaking out from the mist# of time. This time I was pleasantly surprised by an on site food truck serving a hot lunch of burgers and fries in such an isolated location. Not only tasty and welcome on a chilly day, but also very reasonably priced given the circumstances.

Another hidden gem! Lovely stroll from the carpark through the trees. Troglodyte caves and a very high tower! Really interesting site and plenty to see

Parking is roughly 700m from the castle with a walkway of loose stones to get to it. There is parking closer for those that need it. However, if you are not steady in your feet then maybe give this one a miss as there is a lot of steps in the castle.

There are no facilities at the castle other than a small cafe selling a few basics.

Entry cost just under €10 for each adult. We also bought a guide book for a euro which was printed in English. There is an audio tour that you can use on your phone by scanning a QR code. It said on the sign that it was in French and English but we couldn’t see how to change it to English.

The castle itself is a ruin and the majority is outdoors. We visited after it had rained so found it a little slippery. I would recommend wearing sturdy footwear and going when it hasn’t been raining! It is an ongoing restoration project and there are some areas where pictures show what it would have originally looked like.

It was an interesting visit and the staff were knowledgeable and friendly. I think it was worth a visit even if just for the fantastic views!

This was our 4th visit.
An amazing place with a beautiful ambiance.
Lovely place to picnic - some refreshments sold from site.
There is a short walk from the car park but it is very pretty. The toilets were not clean.
A truly amazing place and wonderful to see how it has developed. You can now buy a guide book in English for €1 which was very much appreciated.

It is a well hidden chateau, difficult to drive to and another ten minute walk from the parking lot. Pro tip, don’t stop at the first parking lot, drive as close to the chateau as you can. It’s not like they are going to get a tow truck out there. There is a lot of archeological and restoration work going on. Cool to see it is still in the Commarque family and they are keeping the chateau alive. They are activities besides the chateau, mainly for kids I thought. Also had good space for picnics. Nice place if you have patience for the drive.

The castle is hidden in the middle of the nature. A nice walk is necessary before to reach an impressive and unexpected fortification, today significantly destroyed. Inside the building still entire there are games made out of wood, to play either children or adults

A LONG walk in from the parking lot takes you to a ruined chateau with little of interest and little explanation of its history and why it is significant. It's an archeological work in progess that may one day be interesting, but there are far better uses of your time in the Dordogne.

Dear Doug B, I suggest you to come back when it’s open and when we propose all our tours and activities. It will be much easier to understand this site which is not only a fortified castle but also a prehistoric and troglodytes site. We would be delighted to welcome you on our open hours. Regards, Jean de Commarque

We did not go into the remains of the chateau, but found the troglodyte artifacts more interesting. It's a pretty long walk (15 minutes or so) from the parking lot to the chateau and the access roads to this chateau are very narrow.
