THE CONCEPT : "Grand Crus "à la carte" tastings for all!" A mysterious hallway that opens up into an immense modern art deco room, strange machines made of stainless steel, a tall ceiling where, hung by their feet, hundreds of wine glasses seemingly float, suspended in mid-air... Welcome to Max Bordeaux and its magical concept that opens wines such as Latour, Margaux, Haut-Brion, Cheval Blanc, Mouton Rothschild and Yquem to everyone! The establishment, created by Henning Thoresen, a Norwegian wine merchant from Oslo who had always wanted to make the Grand Cru Classé wines accessible "by the glass," opened its doors to the public in October 2009. "You wouldn't buy a car before test driving it, justifies manager Laetitia Jiminez, so before buying a Grand Cru, you will want to have tasted it first." An innovative concept paired alongside an educational approach: each wine is presented with the history of the chateau, the winemaking techniques and the tasting notes. Every Tuesday night, wine tasting workshops are organized with a sommelier that explains the history of the Grand Cru Classé wines with a comparative tasting between differing appellations. "And once a month, we organize soirée château where a winery proprietor comes to give a presentation and tasting of his wines." The "fun" option on the menu, as it were, is equally seductive: you credit a tasting card* that is given to you upon arrival to the gallery with your desired amount. Each time you taste a new wine the corresponding amount is debited based on the size of tasting you choose (25, 50, or 75 mL). The WINE GALLERY can also be privatized for your events in a unique and central place. MAX BORDEAUX also organizes private tasing workshops on reservation.

I visited here on the weekend while visiting my Brother in Bordeaux. This is something i've always wanted to do. As a wine lover myself I found all of the knowledge very interesting, I came away feeling well informed and quite professional (haha). You get to try 3 different wines, although admittedly I would have liked to have tried more,... More

We went in for a tasting here and had a very nice chap that gave us a tour. The concept is so clever you can try wines of all different prices and styles, where else can you try incredibly expensive wine for a fraction of the price, plus fantastic art with glasses hanging from the ceiling! Loved it.

What a wonderful way to taste a range of superb Bordeaux wines affordably. Four of us spent 3 hours at Max Bordeaux and it seemed like 5 minutes. The workshop regarding describing aromas and bouquets of wine was instructive (I ended up buying the red wine kit later). We tasted 2 First Growths (Chateau Margaux and Chateau 'Yquem), a "super... A great place to try numerous wines on the Enomatic machines. Essentially you prepay a card then take the card and place it in one of the machines. Each machine has six or eight bottles of wine in it and the price is clearly shown. You gave the option of 25,50 or 75ml. There is no discount for volume! A... More

Making formerly elitist wines accessible to everyone with tastings, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff. Tried a 1997 Margaux - delicious.

We signed up for a "workshop" to include wine tasting at Max Bordeaux. This consisted of a lecture (lasting about 1.5 hours) describing the Bordeaux wine producing region/types of wine etc etc. We were hoping to taste some wines - but were given only 3 wines to taste. And I mean taste, since there was only about a tablespoonfull per... More

Many places in France offer a wine-tasting - either free or paid - but it's difficult to find one that doesn't a) assume you know more than you do, and b) expect you to purchase a case (not a bottle!) at the end of it. Max Bordeaux is different. You pay for a card which allows you to dispense small... More

For those new to Bordeaux or those that want to brush up on their knowledge, this place hits the mark. We had 90 min private talk and tasting session that helped us decide which vineyards to visit. I think it must have saved us a lot if time.

Had a great time tasting some amazing wines. What a wonderful find!? Able to try a number of high end wines without having to buy a whole bottle.

Max is a wine shop but the great thing is you can try some fantastic wines at affordable prices. The secret is their use of the enomatic wine dispensers that allow you to buy a sample of wine from as little as 2 euros per glass. There must be around 50 wines available at any one time including 1st growths.... More
