A covered bridge built with pink sandstone, it has 13 arches, the bridge is also a damn.
One of the popular historic sites in Strasbourg to visit.

This 16th century bridge has a viewing terrace on the roof with panoramic views of Ponts Couverts Bridges and Petit France. Very nice photo ops!

This is a beautiful building which was built to create a dam after there was no to defend the city. It faces the covered bridges and from the top you can see a beautiful view of the petite France area.

A fascinating structure designed as part of the city's defences in the 17th century. The main feature today is the walkway along the top which provides excellent views across La Petite France to the Cathedral. It's a particularly great place to see and understand the original defence works across the delta with the multiple towers, numerous gun ports and usefulness of the ability to flood the area. Park at the Modern art gallery nearby and stroll across the Barrage to La Petite France all the way to the old town. Everything's within walking distance. Brilliant!

A special structure. It is a bridge, a dam, and also a place for promenade. From the terrace above you have a beautiful view, especially towards Ponts Couverts. Architecturally, constructively, nothing really spectacular.

The Barrage Vauban is a bridge, a weir and a key component of the defensive works built in the 17th century to protect the city of Strasbourg. The main defensive function of the barrage was to enable, in the event of an attack, the raising the level of the River Ill and thus the flooding of all the lands south of the city, making them impassable to the enemy. The barrage has 13 arches and is 120 metres in length, and is located near the Ponte Couverts and La Petite France.

My wife and I saw the Barrage Vauban during an excursion on a Viking Rhine River Cruise this past April. It stretches across the Ill River and is a lock/dam that was built as a defense mechanism to flood adjoining lands to prevent invaders from capturing the city. It is quite interesting.

It’s an elegant edifice joining the two riverbanks. We crossed both internally and scenically along the top terrace.

It was interesting to discover that it was built in the late 1600s with a number of roles. Primarily as defensive in the event of an attack to raise the waters of the Ill River and thus flood surrounding lands.

Superb vistas can be seen from the top route. While inside is atmospheric with displays of many sculptures from the Cathedral and Palais de Rohan.
