About
The « little Venice » is the name given to the course of the Lauch in Colmar. This name probably came from the original line of the houses on both sides of the river, which serves the southeast of the city. This district starts behind the Koïfhus, goes through the fishmonger's district and to the bridges Turenne and Saint-Pierre. It is therefore at the beginning of the Krutenau, whose etymology refers to places of market gardening on the outskirts of the towns. Originally inhabited by a rural community of wine-producers, market gardeners and boatmen, the Krutenau stretches out around the Turenne Street that the marshal took in 1674 for his triumphant entry in the city. Boat rides are possible there.

- zuvBucharest, Romania27,129 contributionsThe most beautiful part of ColmarThe name "Little Venice" seems exaggerated to me, nothing in the area reminded me of Venice. But the area is very beautiful, it has a special charm, with its houses that seem to be taken out of story books. There are many restaurants and souvenir shops in the area and thousands of tourists. Crowded! There are boats with a boatman that you can walk along a certain (not very long) section of the river.Visited December 2022Written 18 December 2022
- Harald GracholskiCologne, Germany6,898 contributionsStop on the way to skiing in SwitzerlandWe stopped here en route coming from west Germany on our way to skiing in Switzerland and enjoyed a relaxed weekend in picturesque Colmar. The city is everything, but a secret and is known beyond the borders of France and Europe for its beautiful and amazingly well preserved city center. There really isn't anything to add, as the famed beauty of the city really holds up to the expectations. Of course its touristic, but that is no surprise as people are drawn to beautiful places such as this one.Visited April 2022Written 9 February 2023
- TsquirrelCardiff, United Kingdom14 contributionsA charming find in stunning ColmarA charming take on the very famous Venice. We visited during the middle of March, so we found it peaceful and quiet. I imagine this would be a tourist hotspot come the Summer months. It was smaller than I imagined it would be, and you can’t reserve a table in the restaurant which is worth knowing if you wish to eat or drink there. Many other options for food/drink near by. Colmar in itself is a beautiful place, and paired with Little Venice we were not disappointed.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 March 2023
- NorCal-traveler08Orangevale, California1,910 contributionsVery PicturesqueCute village that has been part of Germany and France numerous times. You can really see the influence of Germany with the half-timber houses. This was such a beautiful area of Colmar. We were here during the Christmas Markets which made it even more beautiful. There is a love lock bridge where you can add a lock and you can also take a gondola ride. Very picturesque .Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 May 2023
- AllanJGJWellington, New Zealand3,824 contributionsLovely old townThe whole of the old town including Little Venice are lovely. Beautiful half-timbered houses and other fine buildings everywhere, canals, numerous cafes - and on the sunny day we went a multitude of happy smiling tourists. There was a lot of road maintenance in the area around the cathedral which was a little annoying; but I guess they have to do it as some stage. But Colmar is a lovely town and makes a great day-trip from Strasbourg.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 July 2023
- RobandGem_22Eaglescliffe, United Kingdom61 contributionsBeautiful townWe visited here as a family (2 adults and two children aged 9 and 5). We didn't quite realise how much of the town was 'old town'. Its a very pretty place. Lots of lovely little shops, cafes and restaurants. Parking is quite difficult, as we drive a van and a lot of the parking is multistory which we can't fit into. But there are some parking in the residential areas, which is only a short walk into the town. We spent 4-5 hours here, just walking around, having some food and drink. Nice to have a laid back day.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 30 July 2023

Having visited Alsace several times in the past, I was anxious to visit Colmar.
The old town and Little Venice are quaint, very busy and touristy.
The canal boat tour (8€/pp) is ok; it is short and there is not that much to see.
I would skip the little choo-choo train tour (8€/pp) altogether.
If you arrive by car, go to the ST JOSSE parking (3€/day).
Be VERY careful when driving as the local police uses hidden cameras to issue parking and moving violations; You may receive a ticket through your rental agency with fees and no-recourse; Consider that a "local tourist tax".
I personally prefer tha small towns in Alsace: Ribeauville, Bergheim, Kintzheim, Dambach-La-Ville, Rosheim and Obernai which are a bit more authentic.

It is nice, but little water. I would not compare it to Venise. The market is worth visiting and a 6 montagne Seafood restaurant was outstanding.

Very pretty and colorful. However too many people crowded in a small space. Just like in Venice, except smaller. Take a look but don’t e or t to stay long.

Hope this helps a little?
