The museum in located in a 13th century Dominican sisters' convent. The most poplar piece is the famous Issenheim Altarpiece. It did not disappoint. The museum covers near 7,000 years of history beginning in prehistoric times. For a small city, this museum was impressive.

Medieval art you'd expect but also a nice variety of other art.
This is a moderately sized museum, meaning that it is not so huge that Museum Fatigue sets in. You can do a good tour of the exhibits in about 2 hours. The building itself is quite beautiful. The exhibits are arranged is a strange manner separated over 3 floors but they are still easy enough to navigate. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of art on display.

Absolutely stellar place for a rainy day
Free entrance for the press helps tremendously! But if you’re a fan of medieval, Gothic and Renaissance art, this place is the ticket! I found the layout confusing even with the pamphlet guide but that’s a minor aspect considering the rich collection. All are translated into English. The Isenheim masterpiece is worth a view but I found the collection overall excellent. I also love the collection of 18th and 19th century painted armoires. Some modern art too (a Picasso).

    Stunning Isenheim Altar Piece
A worthwhile museum in a 13th century convent. If you can tear yourself away from the near perfection of Colmar, this is a wonderful diversion. A bit difficult to navigate through but the art on display is excellent. The highlight is the very quiet and serene room where the Isenheim Altarpiece is housed. An 16th century masterpiece which is worth the trip to Colmar for any devotee of religious art.

We visited this museum in August 2021 while in Colmar, France. This was part of an optional morning excursion while we were on our Avalon Waterway river cruise. To enter the museum, you had to show your vaccination card/pass and wear a mask. The museum is housed in a 13th-century Dominican religious sisters' convent and a 1906 former public baths building. The main reason we wanted to visit this museum was to see the Isenheim Altarpiece by the German Renaissance painter Matthias Grünewald. It has become the principal treasure of the museum and it was exciting to see it.

A magnificent museum with very rich collections. We went there for the Isenheim altarpiece and we discovered that there was more than just this obviously unmissable masterpiece. This marvel is very well presented with, above all, great pedagogy. The explanations given by the audio guide are satisfactory.
The welcome is courteous, caring and smiling.
This museum is too rich...we have given up exploring everything...so we will have to come back...which we will do with great pleasure.

We loved the place, both the building, the magnificent interior, and the surroundings.
What can I say about the altarpiece, it is wonderful. You can go up, and I recommend it, to the upper floor and have a general view of the altarpiece and the chapel where it is located. There is an elevator, it is well prepared for reduced mobility.

This museum is on the edge of Colmar old town, next door to the Colmar Theater.
The museum is set in a 13 c Dominican monastery and it's main attraction is German's master Grunewald altarpiece.
However, you'll find also antique art, as well world famous masters such Monet, Goya, Picasso, etc...

Had a mid morning visit on Easter weekend. Even though the city was busy, the museum wasn’t. It was moving since many of the pieces envoked the weekend we visited.

The Isenheim altar is worth it by itself, but there are many pieces worthy of examination. The woodcarving is excellent.

If you don’t speak French, take the audio guide.

Such a beautifully curated collection of art - from 19th Century to contemporary. It was truly surprising and inspirational to find this, in a very well designed building that cleverly combines the original convent with modern architecture.

Added to this the collection of religious pieces and the Isenheim Alterpiece are astounding. I would visit Colmar just for this.

The view of the Isenheim Altarpiece after its restoration is unforgettable. The freshness of the colors is dazzling. In addition, we had the chance to benefit from the passionate and competent comments of a player in this restoration. The guard from whom we had asked for information had the fortunate initiative of directing us to this colleague.
The only problem for which the museum is not responsible but rather the municipality of Colmar, is that the parking lots near the museum are poorly signposted and we wandered for a long time in our car before finding salvation in the Town Hall parking lot.

This museum is huge.

Very rich collection of medieval painting, Renaissance, 19th and 20th. The 17th and 18th are almost absent.

The other Collections are composed of Archaeology, Antiquities, Alsatian Decorative Arts and Contemporary Art.

All in a building of character and air conditioning, the visit is pleasant and makes you want to take all your time.

At the heart of the museum is hidden an Alsatian wine cellar where a smell of 17th century wine floats in the air.

However, making a temporary exhibition on medieval Germanic painting is a funny idea, the museum already contains plenty. A little more originality, what the hell!

Beautiful museum space converted from a 13th century convent. The exhibition rooms run in a square, with a beautiful garden in the middle. Very unique and serene. The contents are mainly medieval religious art, with the crowning jewel being the Isenheim Altar. An absolute must.
