- andreaz332018Lake Macquarie, Australia36 contributionsGreat experienceWhat a fabulous place. The guided tour was fantastic, although I felt sorry for those in our group who weren’t native English speakers: they had trouble understanding our guide’s accent, which thoroughly diminished their experience. In this day and age, audio guides should be an option for those who require it. As per our guide’s suggestion, I read up about the collection on the very thorough website, definitely a journey down the web-version of a rabbit hole, but oh so enjoyable.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 9 May 2024
- HJasmineManchester, United Kingdom124 contributionsA hidden delightA truly enriching experience! I booked one of the tour slots on a Saturday with my parents. Our tour guide was fantastic, he was enthusiastic throughout and actually revealed he had himself been a frequent visitor of the library for years before becoming a guide. There’s layers of history to be discovered at Cheetham library - right in the centre of the city of Manchester! From an 15C monastery, 16C grammar school and of course a library. On the tour, you get the opportunity to sit at the table that Marx and Engles wrote the communist manifesto!Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 June 2024
- LBCdovsNew Jersey296 contributionsWorth a VisitIf you’re seeking historical significance and antiquity, this is an absolute must. Nice little tour of the grounds and the library. Really had a nice time here. The guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the library and the buildings previous uses. A lot of the building is still in its original state which makes it that much better. Definitely check this place out.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 25 July 2024

Amazing to see Johnson’s dictionary and all the other wonderful books in such an atmospheric setting and to see where the communist manifesto was discussed by Marx and Engels!Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 September 2024

We turned up thinking we could just have a walk through the library, but at the entrance we were told that it was only open for guided tours.
Then as my cousin was holding his phone up, the staff at the gate walked out and told us that we were not allowed to take photographs. Although we didn’t take a photo at the actual gate, the staff member made us open up the photos on our phone and we had taken one earlier from further away out on the street and he made us delete it and then also go into the recently deleted folder and delete it from there as well. This was due to students being onsite, which we understood, but there were no signs on the outside of the building stating no photographs were allowed.

I felt the tour was way too short and not worth the money.
When I booked my ticket online, it clearly gave me an option to email or pick up the ticket from the box office.
I went there about 20 min before and asked at the gate but the gate staff was so rude. He reluctantly explained that there was no box office and simply say my name when the tour guide arrives. Then the phone rang and he even used cuss words.
I really felt uncomfortable. Perhaps he just had a bad day but if you are hosting a paid tour, I expect the staff to be a bit more welcoming.
The tour itself was ok. Slightly short for what I expected. I didn't have enough time to enjoy the ambiance but apparently, everything is online so I will look it up.
I felt like it wasn't a very welcoming place at all.

Wow what a gem. Incredible place. I booked a tour for Chetham's Library on a recent visit to Manchester. In April 2022 it was a 2pm tour and you
meet at the gates of the Music school.
Finding the place is a little tricky. This was very helpful - "The location of Chetham’s, which is located opposite the National Football Museum. Entry to the Library is through the main gate on Long Millgate, M3 1SB, just off Cathedral Gardens."
Sian Louise was our guide, she was an incredibly good speaker, funny, full of stories and history........... clearly loves the place and works incredibly hard. The tour takes 75 - 90 mins
A real gem if you are looking for something different.

Had a wonderful tour led by John, who told the history of how Chetham’s Library came to be. What a fascinating story! John is very knowledgable about the Library and was very happy to answer questions asked by the group. It is a very atmospheric place, with the dark oak panelling and the smell of the old books all adding to the experience. A real treat to visit.

Had an amazing tour of the Library today and just wanted to say thanks to the tour guide who made the experience so memorable. She was so informative and made the whole tour a delight. It was like going back in time and we were made to feel part of the place. I cannot recommend this tour enough, so if you haven’t been then put it on your list.

What a great way to spend 90 minutes of our time! We felt like we were in the set of Harry Potter somewhere in Hogwarts. This place is fascinating and the tour guides are the best. The history here is palpable, and one of the most memorable experiences we’ve had so far. This is the place where the “birth” of the Communist Manifesto took place. Marx and Engle did research here. Well worth the price of admission. Go see it.

Couldn't recommend this place enough: we won an auction of a private guided tour with Fran. My history obsessed daughters loved it. The smell of old wood, creaking, the lovely baronial hall and of course the lovely library. Not to be missed. Thanks again!
